Found this at the range today.
What do you think happened?
I'm thinking 308 fired in a 30-06 chamber, hopefully that was it and no one was hurt.

They were fireforming 30 carbine. lol!

I bet they had a short range trip.

I see some really scary things at my range too.
Today there was about 30 DEEPLY pierced primers on the ground by a bench. Im positive they were from blown primer pockets, no one at this range needs to deprime at the bench.

What had me scratching my head was, why didn't they stop at one blown primer???

I was thinking maybe a .45-08 wildcat.. Lol

Yup...That's what happens when you stick a .308 in a .30-06. Being that it didn't split, I'd say the rifle and the shooter were most likely unharmed...But in need of a new pair of underwear after pulling the giggle-switch. :D

It is a very clean expansion. I think I'm more impressed that it didn't split at the neck... That's some elastic brass... LOL

The primer sealant and FC headstamp, makes me think it was a piece of factory ammo. And I would say you're assessment is a good one.
You're right Barrelnut, I used to buy once fired Federal brass and I would check to see if the blue sealant was present on the primer, if so, I knew it was once fired..

Not sure if it's real visible, but the primer was about half way out of the pocket.
That may or may not have created a whole different outcome.

Yeah, I saw that. I'm sure he still had to change his pants afterwards. :D

I know when I disintegrated that primer that went hot in my .25-06 AI during load development, it was instant that something went wrong. It's just a different/funny sound and sharper-than-normal recoil when it fires. It's that nanosecond bolt of fear that hits you, and you get tunnel-vision and go completely numb, like you just had a near-death experience (had a few of those in my short life) and your brain still hasn't made a synapse to make you breathe and let you know that you're still alive... Then, reality kicks back in, you inhale, and your vision widens back to normal and you start the post-situational diagnosis and breakdown.

The same thing happened at the range here except they shot 2 or 3 rounds before one got stuck. They took the gun back and said it was something the matter with it. I'm sure it had nothing to do with shooting 308 in a 30-06.

This is why I don't like shooting at public or semi-private ranges or gun clubs, even though for most of my life I've been forced to use them (soon that will all change once I get some land I've been eyeballing for about a year now). I've seen too many idiots. You just really never know who's sitting at the bench next to you. And I'd rather just shoot at private property at my own pace and around people I trust, than risk sitting next to some half-wit with a weapon and reloading equipment next to me.

With that much headspace I am amazed that it even fired at all.

Cliff
I agree, the .308 has less taper so it must have had enough tension on the chamber walls to hold the case there long enough for the firing pin to strike the primer..
