7 STW vs 28 Nosler vs 7 RUM according to Nosler's #8 reloading book

+1 Fred.

But I am not sure I have a favorite rifle in any caliber. Each cartridge has it place and can perform well if loaded with ammo that is best suited for that cartridge.

Unfortunately, many people buy a rifle chambered in the "Newest", "fastest" or the one that is the designer cartridge of the month. and even though it is rated for xxxx velocity, they think they can bump the velocity way up without any consequences.

I found out many years ago it was best to decide what bullet weight, distance to be used and velocity needed at that distance to take the game being hunted. If I needed to use a big/heavy bullet fast, I went with a big cartridge that would hold plenty of powder.

I have owned most of the 7mms and still have 5 different ones that all fill the use I use them for.
In my opinion the 7 RUM is best for the heaviest 7mm bullets so that is what I load for it.

When I was match shooting using a 308 win I tried everything from the 130 grain bullets to the 240 grain match king. the 308 did not have enough case/powder capacity to push the 240 at any usable speed to be effective at 1000 yards+ so I built a 30/338 and It worked very well at those distances.
I also tried a 7mm rem with 168 MKs at 3254. it was awesome but brass life was 2 shots.

The 28 Nosler looks like a great cartridge and if loaded correctly will have a following. but if it is expected to compete with larger cartridges it will be problematic. So the 7 rum is not better just bigger.

So I guess any accurate rifle is my favorite.

Well said as always JE. Now can you please convince my wife that I need at least 20 different rifles in different cartridges to cover all my bases.
The 28 is not a rum, I know people are pushing it probably a bit further than they should. I've herd of guys getting 3100+fps with it and the 195's. I'm hoping I can get a good accuracy node in the 2950 to 3050 fps range with retumbo and a long throat and get a bit better life out of my brass and barrel. Does that seem reasonable to you?

I think you can get to 2950 fps without too much trouble, but I doubt you will see much over 3,000 fps... I couldn't get rl33 past 2960 fps in my 27" bbl 7stw using the 195... Heck, I've already given my 195's away and am working with the 175 eld-x in my rifle. I don't shoot past 600-800 yards at game anyway (I shoot offhand from sitting usually) so the extra bc will not matter much, and a buddy wanted to trade me some for a bunch of 7stw brass. I jumped on that trade...

Thank you Predator. I will help any way I can. just don't tell her how much they cost.

I pray that when I go(Hopefully up) that my wife doesn't sell my rifles for what I told here they cost.

I build my own rifles, so I probably have more than I need, but never more than I want (Like many others on this site).

I've decided on the 28 nosler because I'm a fan of savage actions (because I'm a DIY shadetree gunsmith wannabe) and I can mag feed the 28 in a standard 110 long action and I can load the 28 nosler in 300wm magazines(with a little tweaking). Can't do that with the RUM, STW, or LRM.
I was originally going to settle on the 7 rem mag but wasn't too thrilled about ballistic performance for the heavier pills. When my smith told me he had a custom reamer to load the 28 with 195 bergers at mag length as well as 8 twist brux barrels, the choice was easy...

Do you have any room left to spare in the mag well when you load 28 Nosler to the lands with 195gr ??
Ive modified my 111 mag well ( hinged floor plate ) to accommodate VLDs for my 300 WM.

I'm in the process of building the rifle, but it's a 110 with cdi bottom metal so I'll be using aics magazines. I believe they have a tad more room. But yes, I will be able to mag feed them with the 195s and be to the lands. My smith had a custom reamer made specifically for this.

I noticed a similar thing when looking over the latest Hodgdon reloading issue published this year. I mainly bought it for the reviews and info on the new IMR powders but looked through the reloading info in the back.

For just about every load they tested the STW and RUM were loaded to significantly lower pressures than the 28. Not suprisingly, the 28 had better velocity.

I agree that the 28 isn't any better or worse, just different.

Really got my wheels turning.
My Savages all have plenty of life left on their barrels but both of my Remington 700 7mags are getting close to max round count.
