I agree with Wild Rose. Too tough for white tail for the most part. I've taken several with 139 gr SSTs. Dropped in their tracks. 30 yds out to 575 yds. 140-150 gr. class seems to be more than enough. I want to give the sirocco II a try next. Heard good things about them as well.
Have had excellent results with Hornady 139 SSTs, 162 A Max, as well as Sierra's 150 SMK, and168 SMK out of my Sendero SF. Looking to try the new Nosler ABLR in 150. Load data seems a bit scarce.

Savage long range hunter should work in either300 win mag or short mag. Don't know about your scope preferences but for 1000 yd say 24x or so. Check out SWFA. There are a number of good threads and polls here as we'll that may prove useful.
15 years ago it would not happen around here either. Out taking care of some grateful farmer's woodchuck problems nowadays and someone who moved up from NYC area a mile away has there tranquility disturbed and all of a sudden the police are involved. No good for hunter or farmer. Just a hassle...
I think Swift would be a step up from BSA. You can check them (Swift 8-32x50 Premier Rifle Scope) at SWFA. Recoil shouldn't be a problem with your gun. You might check out some other brands as well. A dimmer sight picture at high magnification will probably be the biggest drawback but that is...
