    Bullet choices for 270

+1 for 140gr Accubond. My wife shot her bull elk at 400 yards with the 140 AB and he only made it 10-15 yards before piling up.

    .270 the best?

I’m a big fan of the 270 caliber as a deer and antelope cartridge. Especially the 270 weatherby and 270 wsm. For me they hit a sweet spot where they can reach out there, hit hard, and are low on recoil. For elk I pull out the 300 h&h.

    Bone saw

I’ve been really happy with my Wyoming saw.

    Binoculars for hunting and scouting

What kind of hunting do you do? I feel that plays a lot into the decision. Expensive glass definitely makes a difference. Where I notice it the most is in the first 30 minutes and last 30 minutes of light. I had a pair of Steiner predator 10x42s and loved them. Now I have a pair of Swarovski...

    150 grn ballistic tip

I too have a 270 wsm that my wife has pretty much taken over. Guess I need something new to replace it! Anyway, I have been really happy with the 140gr Accubond at 3,100fps. My wife shot her bull elk at 400 yards with it. It only took 5-10 steps before falling over.

308 ammo for elk (barrel length)

Now we’re comparing 250gr or more and nearly 1/2” diameter projectiles? I don’t know anything about hunting with BP and don’t claim to. But that seems like an apples and oranges comparison. Velocity itself won’t kill anything, but it is what is required for bullet expansion along with resistance...

308 ammo for elk (barrel length)

I have personally shot 10 elk myself ranging from 75 to 350 yards with calibers from 243win to 300 win mag (I haven’t drawn an elk tag for 16 years), I have guided/helped with 30+ elk in the last 11 years ranging from 125 yards to 530 yards with calibers from 270win to 338 win mag. I couldn’t...

308 ammo for elk (barrel length)

The elk will know the difference in what your using when a bullet doesn’t expand. Haha I’m just poking fun. The 308 is a great caliber. There’s no denying that. But 500 yards is just too far for a 16” barreled 308 on an elk. 2800fps out of a 16” barrel just isnt realistic with factory ammo...

308 ammo for elk (barrel length)

I understand that, but 16” still seems pretty short to me. Please forgive my stupidity because I have never hunted with a suppressor. But I have hunted a lot of elk. I feel like a 20” suppressed barrel would come in at 26-27” total which is the length a lot people hunt with. I’m not a big fan of...

308 ammo for elk (barrel length)

I’m not saying it can’t be done, but I wouldn’t suggest it. After running some quick numbers for both 150 and 165gr ABs, you would be falling below the minimum 1,800fps at 400 yards. Elk are a strong animal and can go a long ways with a pin hole through the lungs. I like your idea about a 300...

    Is a Daypack worth it?

I run the Eberlestock F1 Mainframe and have been really happy with it. It’s nice to be able to pick whichever bag you want/need and always have a frame to pack out meat. My hunting buddy has an EXO 3500 and it is really nice. Very well designed, comfortable, and can be used as either a day pack...

    270wsm vs 30-06 vs 280ai

It doesn’t seem to be a popular choice, but I have really taken a liking to the 270wsm. I loaded some 140gr accubonds going 3,100fps out of a browning x-bolt for my wife’s elk hunt. She shot a 6x5 bull at 400 yds (398 to be exact, but I’ll give her the 2 yards) and it only went 15yds before it...

6.5 Creedmoor vs .270 Win vs .257 Weatherby

I was able to buy an old sako 30-06 that my great grandpa built, so the 300 isn't completely lonely, but I do think it wants the company of something other than 30 cal. lol I love both those guns, but they are a little on the heavy side. Plus I don't want to have to re zero everytime I switch...

6.5 Creedmoor vs .270 Win vs .257 Weatherby

I like the way you think!lightbulb haha And knowing myself, I will probably end up with all three eventually. If I was to go with a .270Win, a 130gr. ETip starting at 3100fps will be about 1965fps at 600yrds. I understand that nosler's minimum recommended for the ETip is 1800fps. Do you think...

6.5 Creedmoor vs .270 Win vs .257 Weatherby

Thanks for the input everyone. From what I've read, the faster you push the lead free bullets, the better for reliable expansion. That's what made me look into the .257 Weatherby. After researching it, I really like everything I have read about the .257. I will own one eventually, whether for CA...
