How far out will you kill an elk by yourself?

I made a cantilevered upside down L bracket which fits into my receiver. Have quick releases to hold the block and tackle. I am in the 2nd half of 60s, most joints abused and arthritic, with some meniscus left inside. I can bring it along to assist in cleaning, butchering, and cutting into right...

How far out will you kill an elk by yourself?

Wow, thank you. Any plan must be made for conditions, packing, notifying friends, relatives, and the exit plans. Especially if the freezer is about to get stuffed. So many plan everything except how do I get my meat home safely and still good. Your post should be read by just about everybody...

Help me understand the importance of measuring velocity for reloading.

I started reloading without a chronograph. I hadn't done any shooting for a decade "or so". I was using a popular factory ammo, and I started my trials and relearning at 1/4 mile. Couldn't hit paper. I purchased a sled to lock that/those rifles down, legs a bit buried, sandbags on top. Still...

    10mm handgun

I have small hands. Regular 1911s work fine. I purchased a Glock 29, striker fire 10mm. Lucky to hit paper at 10yards, close defensive distance in my opinion. In frustration, and trying whatever I could, right hand, left hand, changing eyes, both open, one closed, placed my index finger under...

Powder suggestions for 130 absolute hammer in 7mm rem mag.

Same here. Most stores "carry what they carry", and will not order for me, even if prepaid. I order online, ship to my son. When we visit them, I get my components. Makes for more reasons to visit our son’s family. Stay for a day or two, spoil our granddaughter a bit.

    What would you do?

I use a slow burner my gun shop owner/hunter suggested, 300 hybrid Bergers, forget the velocity and powder names. But they shoot repeatably, and always hit where the crosshairs intersect. No pressure spikes except once. I left the cartridges in the sun, while shooting near the Yuma Proving...

    Mechanics vs non

Had a similar experience at a dealership. They offered three years/60k service visits. Sounded good. Then they broke a stud when rotating my tires. Told me the repair would be co-pay of close to $300.00. I told them I wanted the damaged parts. Why? I work in a laboratory, and our machine shop...

    Mechanics vs non

I like the Patrick Henry. Too many do not know anything about him, just a name. Not a hero, just a name. Sad. My grammar school was named Patrick Henry. I add a weeping thread locker after I am positive I will not ever touch it it again.

    Mechanics vs non

Gotcha. I started with little engines, until I had sucked all the horsepower and torque from them. Went bigger, and the little things like pre-fit, airflows, bumps in the manifold, what do oils and gasses do, (at what altitude, temperature, humidity), and proper torque began to invade my dreams...

For those who have done it...

I would love to help you, but what you need, and want, are outside of my experiences. I am sure many here with the knowledge and back ground will help you. After all, is that not why we are here? I am not a machinist either. I was helped by others and many, many libraries to learn new skills...

    Almost too easy

hmmm, how do I convince my wife that we need a bigger deep freeze, just in case?

    What would you do?

I would suggest a .338 LM. My current favorite. A bit heavy, it owns a bi-pod. I was taught to shoot from an object, sitting or prone. Thank you, dad for teaching me, back in the early to mid-1960s decade. I use Norma brass, 330 grain Bergers, a 50 mm collecting lense Vortex, the model escapes...

    Almost too easy

Great. Looks like your spare time is well used. I am retired and now have limited gun funds. I reload most so I am not short on cartridges.. I use my 22 magnum, 2 pound pull for all my small game, and some medium size. Up to 100 yards it hits within a 1/4 inch of my aim point. Head shots. Then...
