    130/140gr vlds on deer

Sierra22, What rate of twist were you using with the 6.5x284? That is the first time I've heard that a Berger failed.

    130/140gr vlds on deer

I was wondering what peoples experiences with a 130/140gr Berger or JLKs have been with deer. I'll be shooting them at .260 speeds. I know the heavier VLD's (7mm/30cal) work great on deer, but was wondering how 6.5mm bullets would perform? How do they do on shoulder shots? Thanks

Why did Berger change their twist rates?

It's a 1-8.5 and so far it's shooting the 139 scenars fine. But then again it's still warm out. If the twist was border line I wouldn't think that I would have issues unless it's cold.

Why did Berger change their twist rates?

When I had ordered my rifle, Berger's recommended twist for a 130gr 6.5mm VLD was 1 -9". Now it's 1 -8"? How often were the 130's not working in the 1 - 9" to need the increase in the recommended twist?

    JLK VLDs on game

They both use the J4 jacket but is it the same thickness?

    JLK VLDs on game

From what I heard the Berger VLDs can preform pretty well on game. But what about the JLK VLDs? I believe they both use the J4 jacket, and they're VLDs so terminal performance shouldn't be too different? Any body use the JLKs on deer?

    backpacking and long range

Berger 180 gr has a BC of .684. There are others that are higher, but I don't know how easy they are to find.

    backpacking and long range

Yea I can see that, two different sports is a good answer. I was thinking some people were packing there long range gear in several miles. How far does that average solo long range hunter go then once the quad is parked? Thanks for the replies so far!

    backpacking and long range

I can get my pack out weight down to 30lbs with food for 7 days in the Rockies and 2L of water. Granted this is in the summer with temps down to the low to mid 30's. The most I carried was 65lbs with a Dana Astraplane for about a week. So I think that it would be possible to combine my three...

    backpacking and long range

I looked at the “what are you packing in with” thread in the backpacking section but that looked like it wasn’t geared towards long range hunting. I backpack and like to shoot long range so I’m thinking this would be a good time for me. However I'm a light weight backpacker and have a hard...

    Who is from Wisconsin!

I shoot targets at a rifle range out to 1200 yards now. I however rifle hunt up near Mountain so it's all close in. The buck that I shot this year was oh...about 10 yards. : ) But all of my time target shooting has been on "flat" ranges. I just think that it would be fun, to find some areas...

    Who is from Wisconsin!

I'm from Green Bay and try to get down to the 1200 yd range in Lodi as often as possible. Otherwise it's the 550 yd one in Shiocton. I would like to find someplace up north to practice some angle shooting. I rifle hunt but I would like to get into long range hunting. So anyone in the area...
