Since this post is talking about the 338 Excalibur which doesn't happen often I would like to show you guys probably one of the only 338 Excalibur test barrels. I bought this straight from A-Square ammunition when they had their closing auction.

If you want to have a benchmark barrel fluted have benchmark do the fluting. If they won't flute a used barrel then it is probably best to not have it fluted.

The mill/lathe you listed will do neither. You really need to buy 2 separate machines. Pick up a good 10x36ish lathe and a good bridgeport style mill. Expect to have over $20k in the combo with some tools.

I have built many wsm rifles on stand shank short actions. You do need to shorten a bolt head if you want to use a long action bolt. PT&G also makes new correct bolts for it. They will function fine also, the only reason why you would want to go long action is for a longer COAL.

No more updates, winter has hit hard and we have had many days of -10 and colder temps. Powder was us 869. I am going to try some 50bmg on the next loads.

A side note, not all Rum and WSM actions were large shank. I have a 116 300 Rum that is a small shank and I have seen others. But as geargrinder has said the small shank actions are perfectly fine for rum/wsm builds.

It might be able too, but it has to be very hard on the reamer. Plus you would be cutting the coating off of the throat where you really want to have it.

The JP is far from an 80%, but I have a blank sitting on my work bench that I am going to try. I think it will be a fun project and I am going to do mine all on a manual mill. A machine center with a 4th axis would be ideal but sometime one needs a little challenge.

What kind of rifle does he need rechambered with a nato reamer? The only chamber I would ever cut with that is an ar barrel that will just shoot nato ammo. If it is an ar barrel I wouldn't rechamber it. If it is a bolt gun then why does he want to use that chamber?
