I'm still not sure why I sold my 338 RUM. It was a Rem 700 BDL that I had ported like an integral muzzle brake, but with no holes on the bottom. I had it Duracoated and I bedded it into a McMillan stock. That thing would shoot 225 gr Accubonds into 1/2" or less at 100 yards. I killed one...
My LH stainless 700 that I put a takeoff .257 Wby stainless fluted factory barrel on. 90 gr Absolute Hammers at 3800 fps. 2" high at 100 yards puts me point blank out to 400 yards. Formerly 100 gr E tip at 3600 fps. It has gotten the job done for me from 50 yards all the way to 425 yards.
I took the XP 100 7mm-08 out for the Missouri Late December alternative weapons season. I don’t hunt with the XP until I have my buck tag filled, but man do I love it!
I set up overlooking a picked corn field for an evening hunt. With 15 minutes of shooting time left, I had just deconstructed...
I just shot a whitetail buck at about 60 yards with a 90 gr Absolute Hammer at 3800 fps from my .257 Weatherby mag. Quartering away shot. Shredded the lungs and destroyed the top of the heart. Exit was on the front of the opposite shoulder but did not hit the shoulder bone. The exit wound was...
My 8mm Mag with Rock Creek barrel referenced earlier in the thread is now bedded into a McMillan Game Scout stock. When verifying zero for a Utah elk hunt, I shot a 3 shot 200 yard 0.43" group with 200 grain Partitions at 3050 fps. It has printed multiple half moa or better groups at various...
Unless you disable the central nervous system, it is a crap shoot. I generally shoot behind the shoulder and have had deer react by running 50 to 100 yards and I've had them drop where they stood. This is with no major bone hit, just ribs and lungs. Many different cartridges and bullets. As an...
Bite the bullet and stock up on new brass for the RCM while it is still available. If you're not willing to do that, sell it and buy the 338-06. 30-06 brass will be available for the rest of your life.
The 338 RCM may not hold it's resale value in the future if brass becomes difficult or...
I've owned the 7mm, 300, and 338 RUMs. All factory Remington sporter 700s. The 7mm was one of the most accurate rifles I've ever owned. Under half inch at 100 yards with boring regularity with the 150 gr BT. The 338 was not far behind, averaging half inch or less with the 225 gr AB. Both were...
Holy smokes! Talk about a blast from the past! I typed that up 17 years ago.
That 338 RUM went down the road, but not before it accounted for a bull elk and some whitetail deer.
My choice now would probably be my Rock Creek barreled 8mm Rem mag. I've killed elk, bears, whitetails, and coyotes...
