Truth to longer necks improving barrel life?

I'm not so sure that fluid dynamics are non-intuitive, but I do know that many people that install muzzle brakes and some that manufacture them misunderstand the physics of how they work. Of course it really only matters to know what works, not why it does. The theory about neck length and...

    Gunsmiths on the forum

I haven't been to this forum in a long time. I retired a couple of years ago and I do a little work for a local start up gunsmithing shop. I do check in over at the Accurate Shooter forum and I see many of the smiths I know are posting over there.

    Remington 700 Recoil lug question

It amazes me that so many people just can't believe that recoil lugs can be bent from recoil. The total design of the factory lug and factory barrel leaves a relatively weak point because the part of the lug that encircles the barrel tenon is fairly thin and the barrel diameter directly in front...

Picatinny rail for a Rem M788?

Ken Farrell has them, both 3 and 4 screw versions https://www.kenfarrell.com/index.php?route=product/product&path=20_27&product_id=290 https://www.kenfarrell.com/index.php?route=product/product&path=20_27&product_id=291

    cerakote clear?

I don't know of a more durable room temperature clear clear than automotive clearcoat. Baked Cerakote clear is the bomb on bare metal.

    Mark V truing.

Neck sizing only will not eliminate any problems and will likely cause some, especially in a magnum. A high quality full size die should be used every firing. I do not know of a single Benchrest competitor that neck sizes only in this day and age.

    Salt bath nitride

There are a lot of different kinds of Nitride. Assuming you are talking about The salt bath treatment usually called "Melonite", It's not a do it yourself process, but you could sent the brake off to be treated by the same folks that did the barrel and it would be a pretty close match.

    Bottom Metal Inlet?

Possibly the M5 inlet for AI mags. Not for the Remington Factory DBM.

    Muzzle Brake install

You can do this while you have it chucked up, and most likely do a serviceable job, but it would be best to set up the barrel and trim the shoulder on the barrel to time the brake, then bore the brake in place on the barrel. This will give you concentricity so that you don't need to have any...

    Marking caliber on rifle Barrel

The shop I work in has both a laser engraving set up and a HAAS CNC mill. Nowadays it seems as though most professional smiths have either a machine engraver or something similar. If you aren't doing work on a scale to justify the cost of these options, hand stamping can be done neatly enough to...

    Help me understand wyatt mags

The MBE-5 is cut to work with factory bottom metal although it may take a little fitting. The stock cut may clear as is, or it may need a little more clearance at the rear of the mortise. If your action is cut for the magazine, the rest is just hand fitting. The matching Wyatt follower is very...

Bolt face ID vs. Case Head OD

What you have in mind might work. Several of the custom action makers offer a "universal bolt face" which is large enough for .308 diameter case heads but will also work with PPC cases. That is nominally a .033 difference. Not everyone has been happy with this option. They are shipped with an...

    Devcon syringe?

I use syringes to apply epoxy in tight places. There are glue syringes available from Amazon and other suppliers that have a curved, tapered tip and no needle, the tip can be trimmed so that the outlet is large enough to flow the thicker bedding compound.

PTG Uni Throater For Short Throat Grendel Barrel

Follow the directions that come with the throater kit, use plenty of oil, clean all the chips from the reamer and barrel after each cut. Good luck. I almost always use mine with the barrel set up in the lathe, but the first time I used one it was with the action and the barrel by hand and it was...

PTG Uni Throater For Short Throat Grendel Barrel

The spiral flute tends to be easier to use by hand because it doesn't grab the lands and it is less likely to leave a burr. Once you find the right setting you should be able to get a good result in other barrels although you may find that the exact seating depth to touch the lands will still...
