favorite powder for 45-70 modern loads?

I made the mistake of loading some 405 Hornadys for my Ruger No.1 45-70, OMG! I Don't know if it was the powder or the pill, my shoulder still hurts from 20 years ago. Loaded that bullet with another powder and it wasn't that bad. Short answer, don't use 3031 with heavy bullets, lol

My daughters 160" 8 pointer... she can shoot!

Thanks Bluedog and congratulations, I never share posts without asking. Nothing like sitting with you child when they do a great job. My son and I are leaving this morning for a Whitetail hunt in SE OK, hoping to put him on something. He is older, but I was with him when he shot his first cow...

    Hunting with Dad

Turpentine, I'm with you. I had several guys at the Pheasant Club try to buy her, no way. It was a regular thing to let her out in the mornings, always checked the gate. The latch was the type she could not open. One Saturday morning after letting her out, I went back to bed. I would always...

    Hunting with Dad

This is not a hunting story, but an example of what I had to deal with! I've always been a die hard Ford guy, Dad hated Fords, loved his Chevy's. In the mid 80's I installed a new motor in my '75 F250 Ford (the one in the photo above). It was built 484 cubic inch Ford big block (stroked 429)...

    Hunting with Dad

My last hunt with Dad was 1994 in Montana. Probably shouldn't tell this story, but it been long enough to share publicly now. We were hunting Deer and Elk near Ennis MT, on the second day I shot my buck with an XP-100 pistol chambered in 308. Dad laughed at me for hunting with it, said I would...

    Lapua At-a-Boy

Want to give a shout out to Lapua. I was lucky enough to win a gift certificate from Lapua at the High Plains Handgun Metalic Silhouette National Championship in Oklahoma last September. https://m.facebook.com/groups/192016090370430/?ref=share&mibextid=NSMWBT Sent the cert in requesting 6.5...

    Hunting with Dad

Thought I would start a thread about hunting with you Dad. Len, would love to see a catagory for hunting stories with our dads or sons (Moms and Daughters also) I'll start off with this one, its a bird hunting story. In 1977 I got a new German Short Haired Pointer, Pipper. I had been working...

    308 win still worth having

I shot High Power Silhouette for years with a 308, never had a target not fall when it was hit. Even it a couple in the leg that went down. Along comes the 7/08, with all the hype, I barreled one up. Had 3 rams at two different matches at 500 meters just quiver when hit. Yup, pulled the...

    Ruger 77/44 Load Data Help?

I have a Ruger 77/44 that shoots 240 XTP great at 50 yards, looks like a shotgun at 100. It was suggested by a few to try the 300 gr XTP. Finally found some yesterday. Looking at loading data on Wolfe's load Data, their high load is 21gr H110. The Hornady site gives max as 19.8 H110 (14" TC) I...

Does anyone see a difference using different primers?

I would like to share a funny story about primers, but first, IMHO primers will make a difference when you are shooting precision targets. They will all shoot when the load is tailored for that primer. I don't interchange primers with out working up a load for that primer. That is with a...

    New old .25 cal wildcat

A No1 will never rival good Bolt gun, but I still love them. Biggest problem with a No1 is the long lock time. A very important factor in accuracy. Most shooters discount the importance of a good well fitted stock. Like you, I've taken many rifles that the owner gave up on , with a simple...

    New old .25 cal wildcat

Sorry Dakota, just seen this post. We form the Souper from 308 Lapua. But it can be formed from from any 308 based case. The last one was built on a Mod 70 with a 1:9 twist Bartlein Barrel, amazing with 100 gr TTSX. The Souper is not going to match up with the big quarter bores with heavy...
