    Which chamber, 6mm or 243 ??

I have a brand new hart heavy barrel 30" long, 6mm with a 1 in 8 twist. Plans are to shoot the 105 Amax or the 107 SMK. could you guys give advice on which caliber to use. I plan to mainly hunt hogs out to about 600 yds with it. I have looked at the standard 6mm and the .243 but something like...

    Barrel blocks

I have a differant type of barrel block. Bill Shahane makes one that clamps on the barrel. Block is 6" long and tightens up underneath barrel, all screws are hidden. This block is on a 30" heavy varmint. Bill will tell you that a block will help with vertical strings at 1000+ yards. Also the...

    Brake

I too have a question on this brake subject. Maybe best suited for you gun smiths out there. I know muzzle crowning is very important, 11 deg. or the step crown. When we use a brake what kind of crown is under the brake? Always wanted to know. Thanks

168 AMAXs, as good as MKs?

amtmn I have a copy of the Hornady 5th edition loading book and it has data for all AMAX. This is a two book set. I looked to make sure the 168 was is there. I shoot the the 140, 6.5 A-MAX and they do a pretty good job. Only killed ground hogs no deer size animals yet. The gun/bullet will...

    Neck tension trouble, 6.5x284

Getting closer. Finally got to shoot those 11 rounds. E.S. was 56, a drop of 31 fps from the original 87 E.S. I reamed the doughnut out with a forester neck reamer. This gave me a seating press of about .001. Also I reamed the flash hole, measured and weighed each bullet. Tried to go the...

    Proper brass sorting

Could someone explain to me whats the proper way to sort brass? What weight differance would make it unexceptable. I used a digetal scale to weigh a few and came up with a total differance of 2.2 grains, heaviest to lightest. Is this too much?

    Neck tension trouble, 6.5x284

Thanks Darryl Bumping that shoulder is tricky business. I bumped that shoulder back .002 is all and it cuased all that neck tension trouble. I'm started to think there's more resizing done to the walls of the case than the shoulder. I have heard so much about shoulder bump in my short reloading...

    Neck tension trouble, 6.5x284

I seem to have a tight spot in the neck of my brass, Its down near the shoulder and bottom of the neck. I can take a fired brass and start a bullet down the neck, the bullet will stop when it reaches this junction.(NECK/SHOULDER) Seems like a donut at the bottom of the neck. I have to think...

Will Rem 700 triggers fit 721/722 actions?

Dave Thats what I need to start doing, have the action milled. I have two 721's around here I picked up just for the purpose of building on the action. My cousin is a gunsmith and he does alot of my work. He has suggested many times milling the rear tang. I get impatient and buy a Jewell...

Will Rem 700 triggers fit 721/722 actions?

I think the saftey is different. A 700 action is cut away to allow the saftey to come up closer to the action. A 721 is completly round back there. A 721 trigger will work on a 700 but not the other way around. A 721 trigger in a 700 action will have a bigger gap between the saftey and the...

    Thanks Bill Shehane

Troy I have the Shehane ST-1000, 3" forearm, no pistol grip. I see he has a varmint style now with a 2.5" forearm and the pistol grip cut in. Which do you have and how do you like it, how does it handle in the feild? [ 08-26-2003: Message edited by: PennMonty ]

    Chronograph question.

Well I really got in over my head with that question, Lots more Info then I expected. I do understand it a little better, seems to me bottom line is lower the numbers the better. The rifle I was shooting is a 243, rebarreled with a Shilen tube #5 contour. I use it mainly for deer hunting. On...

    Chronograph question.

Brent Thanks, I have mainly used my chrony for velocity readings in the past. I can see now how to find bad brass in the lot. Funny you picked up on the 47 SD, this string had a ES of 104 fps. I was shocked at first but after looking into things closer I found A Winchester case in with my...

Need Help finding a remington action...

Hilts Are you going to build the rifle yourself or have a smith do it? Many gunsmiths will provide actions. In my limited knowlege of actions you will need to stay clear of the magnums, the bolt face is to large. Both long and short M700 should work fine. If your planning to feed this rifle...

    Chronograph question.

I understand what average velocity is, I understand what extreme spread is, but I DON'T understand what standard deviation is. I was down at the range this morning and shoot a few groups. Best standard deviation I got was 7 out of 5 strings fired. Worst was 47 out of those same strings. I also...
