.338 is great but you better you better make sure your BAR is legal where you hunting. I dont know about all states but in PA, as well as a few other states its unlawful to hunt with a semi.

Len, If you want to hunt long range coyotes go to northern PA. Elk,Mckean,Centre counties are good. Climb up a mountain and you can shoot a long ways.Its mostly all public land and there is a pretty good number of 'yotes. In january and feburaury there will be snow and visibility would is good.

Get the .300. Out to 700 yards it has plenty of energy for elk. In an 11 pound rifle recoil would be minimal so you dont a break.

Im looking into getting a remington 700 lss(laminated, stainless) in 7mm ultra mag as a "carry gun" that will be used say out to 500 yards but mostly alot less. I plan on using it for whitetails and black bear around home here, plus elk in idaho and in africa. just wondering if anyone has heard...

The general rule i was taught if taking a headshot (assuming the deer is broadside) is put the crosshairs right behind the ear and its either hit and clean kill or a clean miss.

In response to what bruce said it is true that everything shutsdown very quickly. Alot of guys at our deer camp shoot doe in the head, and to solve the problem of blood they simply cut the throat and hang them upside down on a tree. (May seem almost morbid but it sure gets the job done)

If you dont want to ruin any meat the head shot is better. If you hit just a little front on a lung shot the front quarters are gonna be bloodshot like hell.

I would I have used The nikon monarch and the leupold vari-X II and vari-x III, and i would say the nikon is more comparable to the vari-x II than the III. Just a personal opinionl, but between the variX I and the monarch i would go with the monarch.

You can pick up a model 70 coyote(heavy stainless 24" barrel, 9 lb rifle) in any of the WSM's for 600 or 700 dollars. I'd also take a serious look at a savage model 12. The ones ive seen have shot MOA or better out of the box.

The 6.5-06 is basically the 30-06 necked down, like your 25-06 is an '06 necked down. .270 wsm is a great cartridge for 500+ yards on deer size game. If you dont handload that would be a better choice too.

How do you go about become a gunsmith/custom rifle builder. I know there are some trade schools out there, any recomendations?
