Its finally complete...my ultimate 30 Cal. Hunting Rifle

Very cool. I also had a desire for an accurate rig for hunting that would fill all the same criteria. I went with a 21” barrel, 5” suppressor, .300 Win. Almost every component we chose is different, but the result roughly similar. The only complaint I have is that’s it’s so fun to shoot...

Double Rifle Case for Air Travel

I’ve been to Africa several times with a Pelican 1750. No problems at all except for on a flight from DEN to SLC. The insufficiently thoughtful baggage crew broke a latch. It was an easy fix.

    What would you do?

The magic answer for me has been .300 Win in a 21" barrel and a TB Ultra 5 suppressor. I wouldn't deliberately take a shot at 1000 on elk, but I wouldn't hesitate to clean up a wounded one at that range. Elk are big, which is both good and bad. Mostly good, as the vital zone is pretty large...

What is the Typical Distance Range You Kill Big Game At?

I've been hunting for 40+ years, mostly open country in the Rocky Mountains. For the first 35 years, the average would be in the 200 yard range. Some closer. Some further. During the last five years in North America (6-7 animals) my average rifle kill is over 400 yards. In Africa, the range...

What’s your five? 5 Calibers to do it all...

I have no idea if I've posted to this thread or not. Maybe my answers have changed. Assuming pistol, shotgun, and .22 LR needs aren't included, I'd go with this: .22-250 - for little critters .260 Rem AI - for antelope through sheep, the vast majority of NA game .300 WM - for deer through...

Talk me into or out of buying a suppressor, please.

I first tried one while hunting in Africa. Absolute game-changer. Less muzzle rise, less recoil, less noise, easier to shoot. Came home and got one, years ago. Now have a big old .30 that is use for a few different guns and a 5” TB ultra I use for hunting. My daughter shot a mulie buck at...

Short barreled magnum for supressor use.

19" bbl in .300 Win. TBAC Ultra 5, massively fun to shoot. Using 190 gr Berger HVLDs. Will almost always put 3 shots inside of 0.3" at 100. Last three mulies were all over 500 yards. 1800 fps out to 850 yards, chrony says 2785 fps at 10'.

    Low recoil deer caliber

A Tikka .243 with Barnes TTSX was the solution for me. My pipsqueak nephew killed his elk with it last year, my even more pipsqueak niece her elk the year before, and my son used it for his best deer to date. The first two are excellent marksmen and participate in school & 4H programs...

    New Build: 6.5-300 Weatherby

As long as you’re doing it, just order two barrels, same reamer, cut at the same time. That way, you won’t be counting and regretting every shot. When it goes, swap ‘em out.

    Shooting after heart surgery

Also….. just so you know, your lungs are actually fine. They’re not working well because the pump isn’t working well. The trauma to your chest wall isn’t helping either.

    Shooting after heart surgery

Interesting comments so far. Non-cardiac surgeon here….. - While most doctors trend to the liberal side of things, most surgeons trend conservative. This is true on both coasts and in both cities & rural areas. - Your cardiologist is NOT the one to ask. Ask the cardiothoracic surgeon...

Slowing down a hot cartridge (don't hate on me for asking)

Limbsaver recoil pad. I unashamedly used one on my .416 Rigby in Africa. Might be a little tight if he has a small build or short arms.

    6.5 haters

Me too, obviously...... but not everyone puts in the time or effort to be good at it. Your average Joe is more likely to have a successful hunt with something that he isn't scared of.

    6.5 haters

The arrival of the 6.5 Creedmore probably was magic to the many individuals who were scared of their magnums and shot them poorly. Little itty-bitty bullets in the vitals are way more effective than big fast bullets that go random places. For once, they were marketed something they tried, and...

    Elk/Deer Rifle performance

When I built “The Gun”, the magic answer for me was .300 Win, 21” barrel, suppressed. It kills elk as dead as anything else. It’s a heavy sucker though. Lately I’ve been using a .260 Ackley. It’s pretty impressive. There’s no chance I’d build a light rifle in .300. I doubt I’d shoot it...
