velocity vs accuracy in long range shooting

I've worked up a very similar load using 168 gr bullets. I use AA2520 instead of RL15. Anyway, I found two distinct accuracy nodes. The first was very near minimum. The second was right at 42.7 gr. The max for this load is 44 grains. As I went higher in the load (closer to max) I lost...

    Sling studs mounted sideways

One reason to want the sling swivels mounted on the side of the stock is to allow you to use a detachable bottom metal with a 5 or 10 round magazine. Having the swivels on the side allows you to carry your rifle without the magazine digging into your back or side. Another reason is to allow...

    ar bolt noise

Driving up would scare em just as much a letting the bolt go home. But, I would also suggest doing it in the truck ...... but, after turning off the truck. So, you aren't chambering in a running vehicle. Big deal here in WA state. Either that, or wrap the whole reciever in a blanket or...

    What cartridge Rem SPS varmint?

I have a Remington 700 SPS Tactical with a 20" barrel. The factory round that has shot the best from that rifle is the 168 grain Hornady AMAX Match. So, I decided to roll my own using the 168 grain AMAX. I use 42.7 grains of AA2520 and CCI primers. I've been shooting sub .5 MOA groups...

Anything Wrong with the Choate Ultimate Sniper Stock?

I had an ultimate sniper and it was a good stock. The reason I sold it is because the pistol grip is wayyyy toooo thick. I just couldn't get a decent hold on the pistol grip. That and the checkering on the the stock is really really rougn and will take skin off if you aren't careful. Other...

Practical, Tactical Or ? By Ward W. Brien

That was a good article. I too am a newly retired/disabled veteran and prefer a tactical rifle. Not because I'll be hunting people in an urban environment with it. But, because that is what I prefer to shoot. And, many of the recent designs are upping the ante for hunting rifles. Just...

    168gr .308 to 1000 & Beyond .... Anyone Doing It???

Isn't that a mighty hot load with AA2520? My book says max is 44 grains.

Buying a scope...overwhelmed by the possibilities

If you are looking for a really good scope for under 500 bucks, I wouldn't look any farther than the Vortex Viper 6.5-20 x 50 PA, although you can get the 6.5-20 x 44 for even cheaper and it works just as well. It's lower end than the HS series, but the glass is excellent. It the best scope I...

    Recoil is killing me

I'd put a brake on it and a limbsaver. You could also wear a pad or a padded shirt when you shoot. The brake (#1) and the limb saver (#2) will make the most difference.

    168gr .308 to 1000 & Beyond .... Anyone Doing It???

Well, I'm currently getting around 2660 from those loads. And, I am no where near max with the AA2520. The reason I picked the 42.7gr charge was due to a very good accruacy node. I can take it all the way up to 44gr. Although it would give me much better velocity, the accuracy will...

Advice Regarding Big Bore Bullets for Coyotes

If you're going to shoot 7mm Rem Mag and 30-06, I suggest either solids or FMJ if you are trying to keep the hide for taxidermy. Anything hollowpoint or any kind of ballistic tip is probably going to do some major damage. Just my .02 cents.

    168gr .308 to 1000 & Beyond .... Anyone Doing It???

I'm looking to take my .308 out to 1000 (and possibly beyond). I'm shooting a Remington 700 SPS Tactical. 20 inch barrel, 1:12 twist. I'm getting sub .5 MOA from 100 out to 600 using my handloaded 168 grain AMAX. I'm using 42.7 gr of AA2520 with CCI primers. Anyway, I keep hearing "if you...

    AR Grendel, bolt 243, 260 or 6.5Swede

Well, If you plan on long range hunting, then you may want to rethink getting the caliber with the cheapest ammo available. The Privi is probably not going to give you decent accuracy. If you plan on hunting long range, then you need to look to the bullets with the better/best accuracy...
