Anyone have any comments concerning Bergers in the smaller calibers? I have a .257 Wby and have considered loading some 115's for testing. I have had good success out to 500 yards with 100 grain NBT's on Whitetail. Just thought it might be fun to see what how the Bergers perform.
I've been shooting Bergers in a 30-378 (210 VLD) and they are very accurate. Yesterday was my first time hunting with them. Kind of a test. I watched a buck (just a spike) cross a field and stop right by my old target at 300 yards so I thought why not. :)
Put the crosshair on his shoulder...
All of my non-magnum CF rifles are zeroed at 200 yards. Magnums at 300. Zero at 200 and have her shoot a group at 300. If she has a standard "duplex" reticle use the top of the bottom post and see where it hits at 300 . I have a little cheat sheet for my duplex scopes with my standard handloads...
I don't really have a hunting knife? I have a whole drawer full of knives but I rarely ever use them! Here at the house where I do 90% of my hunting (deer) I drag the carcasses to the skinning rack and I use an Old Timer boning knife for everything. Soft steel, easy to sharpen, great for...
I dated a PhD in college who told me that she was sending a styrofoam ball using some form of a photon gun running above 18,000 mph (26,400 fps). It was cutting holes through steel plates. She moved to Los Alamos and I lost contact with her. Probably a good thing. :D
Or the exact opposite. Take for example the .300 Blackout that some think is the ultimate hunting round. I recently read an article where the author extolled the virtue of the 110 grain Barnes TAC-TX bullet having wonderful penetration and expansion out to 300 yards. This from a bullet that has...
Thanks Cliff. Were those antelope all taken at the same distance? Using my "rule of thumb", and for the sake of argument...let's say a 30-30 loaded with a 150 grain bullet has a retained energy of about 800 footpounds at 200 yards. Most of us will agree that a 30-30 is basically a 200 yard...
I've always limited my rifle/ammo and effective hunting range based on a minimum of 1,000 foot pounds of energy at that specific range. I remember reading that years ago in several rifle and hunting books and periodicals. I was checking zero on my 257 Bee yesterday (sweet gun, <1 MOA) using 100...
