I have shot many elk with 270 30-06 300wm and my all time favorite that outperforms them all is the 338wm with 250gr bullets. I have shot at least a dozen with that combination and NOT ONE took more than a step after being hit, every other caliber I have personally shot elk with, or watched...
Exactly, in fact my path is not to try and dial down to the tightest group as sometimes I am shooting 600yds+ hanging off the side of a tree, or crowded onto a steep hillside stump etc. and my belief is that when the "real world" comes into play its not so sure that a range grop of 1 to 1.25"...
Wolves are killing every animal they can find. EVERY pack kills an elk sized animal every three days. Do the math Coyote Shadow Tracker...... in an environment shared with man, they are doomed to starve, we should have left em alone in the first place. Grand Thinkers like those who started this...
I am surprised that a 220gr ELDX @ 761yds would come apart like that, That is good to know. My go to for years in my 338 was a 250 Grand Slam always very high weight retention and I recovered lots of bullets with perfect mushrooms. Switched to 250gr, NAB when the average shot got out to 500yds...
Sounds like you made a great decision, congratulations on your success, need more sportsman like yourself.
Unfortunately too many would have taken the 450 shot with a .223 or a CM or some such. I am not against long range hunting, I do it myself. What I am against is hunters thinking that they...
EXACTLY CORRECT. Not at all arrogant, in fact, I myself don't get my panties in a wad over not meeting the magic .5-.75MOA sightin criteria that seems to be mandatory with most everyone working up long range loads. I choose the bullet I believe in, get it to it's best accuracy even if that is a...
I get the whole tinkering thing. If you can find the components these days to tinker then tinker. The OP said the following about the .308 "
"This load would be a pretty decent long range Elk load to 900 yds or so." speaking about a 150gr. bullet...... When I hear nonsense like this it makes my...
Just bring enough gun and be over it.....
A gun for elk doesn't need the minimum amount of energy left to kill when it reaches the target, it needs enough energy for a clean kill with a bad hit.
Where I hunt on the Oregon Coast (for over 50years), I started out with a 06', migrated to a 300WM...
That my friend may be true, but you are still reading this thread as well as many others(me included) from time to time and so I posted to provide added information to any one looking to gather information on the subject. That ok with you?
Thank you all for your comments and input. I know I had a tall order in front of me to get that bull defined well under the conditions at the time. Bulls like the "one that got away" are extraordinary in the woods out here, (we all know they exist as we can see them on the refuge, but are truly...
