    XP-100

I shoot IHMSA and am more interested in accuracy with moderate recoil. I have used IMR 4895 for a long time.

    Day pack ponderings

You might like the ALPS pursuit pack. It is decent size for a mid-size pack, with lots of organizing pockets. I tried one of their convertible packs but found it bulky when in the fanny pack mode, and more trouble than I wanted to convert effectively to full pack mode.

    Big game caliber suggestions

I like the 338 Federal in 15" barrelled XP-100 with Hornady 200 FTX. They are designed for the lower velocities of the 338 Marlin so are good in the xp.

    Big bore XP100s

I had a .458x2 with 15" barrel and got 2175 from the 400 Barnes, 1844 from the 500 cast. Today I much prefer the milder .338 Federal with 200s.

    Best hunting crossbow?

I have practiced with the Ravin R10 out to 80 yards, the farthest I can conveniently set a target near home. Your scope has to help with trajectory, which is like a rainbow, for distance shots. The Ravin is quite accurate if you do your part. It is big and relatively heavy; the R26 is more...

Brass Case Head Separation after 6 firings

I have used the false shoulder approach for years, even on standard cartridges if the gun has a couple thousandths over minimum headspace. I go .020" to .030" depending on the next size expander I have. To check brass for thinning in front of the thickened head area, I use a piece of wire with...

    Knife Selection

I like the Cold Steel master hunter and pendleton hunter, in Carbon V, CPM 3v, respectively.

No load data for Lapua, plenty for Winchester, Remington and federal

The Hornady 11th edition has load data for the 338 Lapua, but using Hornady brass.

    Best Caliber Rifle Elk

The .338 win mag and .340 Weatherby are great, but I would reach for my .338-06 NULA.

    .284 Winchester?

I have an Ultra Light Arms ,284 that Melvin built for me with 28" barrel. It is the Model 20 short action which has a 3.0" magazine, It pushes 154 Hornady Spire points to 3100 fps and 175 sp's to 2850. If using long, very streamlined bullets, you may have trouble with the short neck...

    Aftermarket Triggers

I like Timney. BTW Melvin uses them on his NULA's and has for decades,

    Ravin 500 fps $$$$$ 😱 $3500!!

The new, faster crossbows have also put downward pressure on the street prices of the earlier models. For example, you can save on an R10 compared to a couple years ago, and it is even today a fast, capable, high quality bow.

    New .338LM reloading help

I determine max COAL for each projectile this way: 1. drop one into the breech and tap it against the rifling with a cleaning rod. 2. insert a cleaning rod through the muzzle until it contacts the tip of the bullet. 3.Using masking tape around the cleaning rod near the muzzle, mark the length...

    Barrel contour

As noted, contour is a compromise. Melvin usually builds his NULA's with a light contour, but he used a Douglas #4 for the 28" barrel I wanted in .284. That gave me 7 mag velocities with accuracy and portability. It weighs about 7.5 lb. with scope etc. Since the rest was so light, I could go...

    338 Lapua ???

From the data I have seen, nothing beats the .338/.378 Weatherby. I built one in the 1980s.
