    7 STW fun

Hey guys, I have a funny 7 STW story to tell... A few years ago, I was working loads up for an Elk hunt. I loaded Barnes TSX 160's, and Accubond 140's ( for the first time ever ). Before then, I had only shot 160's. After awhile, my friend says, your "small" bullets group better than your "big"...

Barnes 145 LRX vs 162 ELDX

Just chiming in again.Working up loads for the 145 LRX. Groups were poor with 80.5 and 80.7grns of IMR 7828. Groups were amazing with 81 grains. I then loaded 81.3 and 81.6, scattered groups. But... at 81.9 and 82.2, groups are again amazing. I'm tempted to keep climbing but if accuracy good...

Barnes 145 LRX vs 162 ELDX

Thanks jlreff. I keep mulling over the fact that despite slightly slower speed, the heavier bullet should penetrate deeper. But...I also know that speed kills! Looks like my rifle really likes the 145 LRX besides! Thanks again for sharing!

Barnes 145 LRX vs 162 ELDX

Thanks for sharing your experience with the ELDX. I just spoke to a rep at Hornady. He was honest enough to say that the bullet is designed to be very accurate out to long hunting distances. IF...you make a broadside shot into the chest, it will perform well. If you will need anything else but...

Barnes 145 LRX vs 162 ELDX

Can anyone share their experience with the terminal performance of the ELDX on mule deer or elk? I am interested in the 162 ELDX due to its SD and BC. I am very familiar with and trust the Barnes. Just trying to learn about the ELDX. Planning to be capable out to 600 yds. Thanks in advance for...

    Barnes 168 lrxs needed

OK, so I tried but no luck. At 100 yds, the 168 LRX hit paper at about a 45 degree angle.I was at the low end of loading but there is no way I'll trust it, even at higher velocity, just because it makes a "round hole".I need great stability for maximum penetration.Looks like it will be 145 LRX...

    Barnes 168 lrxs needed

Well, I’m finally back on here and Chase at Barnes was nice enough to send me 10-12 of the 168 LRXs. Will load and send them down range in the next couple weeks. I will report my results. Happy 4th to everyone, especially our military past and present!!

    Barnes 168 lrxs needed

I’m debating whether I should bite the bullet(pun intended) and buy a box of the 168s or try to buy a few from someone here and potentially waste a few bucks rather than 37 bucks. I trust everyone’s advice against them in my slow twist rifle ,but then there’s the” you won’t know how they act in...

I’m sorry but have never chrono’d it and don’t have another to compare to. As I work up loads, I’ll try to share info with you. Thanks

Barnes 145 lrx enough for elk?

Thanks again guys. I truly appreciate the great advice. Hespco, I tell my friends who will come on this hunt that it’s FAR more important to be able to hit an 8” circle quickly from any ragged rest ( or offhand) than to be able to shoot 0.5” groups from a bench! Thanks again all!!!

Barnes 145 lrx enough for elk?

The reason I started this thread is that although I really loved the 168 LRX and it’s BC, I’ve read in the 7Stw thread that it won’t be stabilized in less than an 8 twist bbl. Mine is a 10 twist Memtb, I agree with your comments.Maybe I should try to find a handful of 168s and try them. Every...

Barnes 145 lrx enough for elk?

Do you guys think that the 145LRX is enough? I used to shoot the 160 TSX but hoping for a better BC. Any advice appreciated. I’m using a 7 STW and an Accumark. Hunting CO. Thanks!!!

    Barnes 168 lrxs needed

Would anyone care to chime in regarding likelihood of my 10 twist Accumark with 24 inch bbl stabilizing the 168s? I know this was discussed a bit in 2015. I guess I won’t know if I don’t try but thought it would be better to ask first. Trying to work up a great load for elk in CO and I really...

A handful of 168 lrxs needed

Hello folks. Haven’t been here in awhile. I know there was talk a few years ago about 1:9 and 1:10 twists not stabilizing the Barnes 168s. My Accumark stabilizes the 160 TSXs just fine. I’d love to try the 168 LRXs unless everyone thinks I’m wasting my time. I’m trying to prepare for a fall elk...
