I regularly hunt whitetail with a 7mm-08. It is a well balanced cartridge, but I would recommend 308 for mule deer. You can get similar ballistics with a heavier bullet (compared to 7mm-08) or use a slightly lighter bullet for better long range ballistics.

Currently living in southeastern PA but hunt in the northeastern part of the state. There isn’t much long range shooting in this part of the state. The southeast is all urban sprawl and the northeast is pretty dense woods or patchwork farmland

Thanks. I don’t get a chance to do much shooting these days between work and having a toddler running around; mostly just some whitetail hunting and back-burner projects to upgrade rifles (triggers, barrel swaps, bedding, etc). How about you?

fyi:I recommend the wheeler professional scope mounting and ring lapping kit. The ring lapping is probably a little overkill but the scope ring alignment tool works great. It’s hard to get good ring alignment without the tool.

Remington model 7 in 7mm-08 for short ranges and model 700 in 300 RUM for long range. 7mm-08 is probably one of the best calibers for white tail. It shoots flat and retains a lot of energy through the trajectory.

I agree with you and the other responses. Scope alignment is critical, even for short range shooting.

Patterning is important to understand how you gun, choke, and brand/size of shell interact. Take a bit of time at the range to get a good feel for combination and it will improve your hunting. If you have previously patterned with lead, don’t forget to consider that steel shot typically holds...
