The Strawberry Wilderness has some great hunting (and elevation if hot) that gets you away from the crowds. There's a good trail system in the wilderness with multiple trailheads on the south side of the range...joaquim miller, east fork canyon creek, table mountain, buckhorn meadow, roads...

Congrats! My buddies and I were also successful and will be trying to pull off some 3rd season magic on cow elk. A lot of the fun is the anticipation and getting the gear together as you mentioned. I can smell the unmistakable odor of a herd of elk right now. :D
