My daughter, about 2 years ago dropped a 5x5 bull at 425 yards with her 7mm-08 shooting a 168gr Berger Classic Hunter flying at 2550fps. Took out both lungs, he took a few steps, and was done.
My daughter started with a 7mm-08. Killed an elk at 425yrds last year. the 7mm-08 is a very good cartridge in my opinion. Load anything from 120 to 168gr and it will get it done. On the other hand, the 6.5 Creedmoor has really come to the front and many have been using it for everything the...
I just bought a use Criterion savage prefit in 6BR for $100. It is a 28" bull 1" at the muzzle. I called my gunsmith and ask about cutting it back to 24" and he cutting it to 24" will loose a little muzzle velocity but it has potential to be more accurate because a shorter barrel is stiffer...
I really like my 6.5x47L. I load Berger 140gr hybrids either .010 or .040 off the lands with 36.8 to 37.2gr of Varget and a CCI 450. Its the most accurate round I have ever had. 1/4 MOA or better at 200 yards.
For 1K I would say the Athlon Ares ETR. It can be had for $1199.99 at optics planted and you can find a 10% off code at times so that makes it $1079.91 its 80 bucks over your $1000 budget but I think it would be worth it. I have the Cronus BTR and really like it but it doesn't have locking...
What area are you hunting in MT. I hunted in the Bridger mountain range at at 6500' and both mule deer and whitetail. Like Braaten said the whitetails I seen were in the bottoms close to creeks and drainages. Good luck!
