I use 43.3gr of Reloder 23 with a 109gr Berger hybrid .189 freebore and get 3115fps in a 30" barrel.

I really like my 6.5x47L. I load Berger 140gr hybrids either .010 or .040 off the lands with 36.8 to 37.2gr of Varget and a CCI 450. Its the most accurate round I have ever had. 1/4 MOA or better at 200 yards.

For 1K I would say the Athlon Ares ETR. It can be had for $1199.99 at optics planted and you can find a 10% off code at times so that makes it $1079.91 its 80 bucks over your $1000 budget but I think it would be worth it. I have the Cronus BTR and really like it but it doesn't have locking...

Was he using one of the target bullets or one from the hunting line of bullets?

What area are you hunting in MT. I hunted in the Bridger mountain range at at 6500' and both mule deer and whitetail. Like Braaten said the whitetails I seen were in the bottoms close to creeks and drainages. Good luck!
