    Prairie dog hunting New Mexico

Take a couple of guns to swap out and allow the barrels to cool on. I usually take three if I am going out to shoot pdogs seriously. 200-300 rounds is what I normally take. When I was guiding hunts, we had a couple of ranches that had some good pdog towns. We would swing by around mid day...

    Best Varminter Rifles / Calibers

It depends on what type of hunting I'm doing??? If I'm doing calling competitions, I use a 223Rem in a Rem 700. I opt for the lighter caliber because - in calling competitions, weight counts. I don't want to blow much weight away. Ranges in my hunting areas are generally within 200 yards. If...

    Let’s talk favorite hunting rigs!

I have 4 centerfires that I hunt with in general: 223, 243, 270 and 7mmRM- 2x Remingtons ( a 700 and a 600), a Weatherby Vanguard and a Model 70 African, in the same order, all with Leupold Glass. All are factory end to end except some minor touch ups, tuning and bedding. I have quite a few...

Field Practice to Make Better Hunting Shots

You are definitely on the right track. Another suggestion is to try shouldering your rifle before getting into shooting position. Part of the diff you are seeing shooting off different platforms from the bench is in shouldering your weapon. As you change shouldering positions it changes head...

How many carry a 44 or similar when you are rifle hunting?

I have always carried a 45LC on my hip when hunting in bear and lion country. I have never had to use it but have been in a couple of situations with lions that could have gone bad. I guided hunts in TX, NM and CO for nearly 20 years and always carried when doing so. I had a couple of...

    Long-ish range prairie dog caliber?

I have hunted pdogs in windy West Texas for a long, long time. I've used everything from 22LR to 7mmRM. My go to guns are 220 Swift and 17Rem. Shots out to 800+ on nice days and 400-600 on normal days. I do have to allow for wind drift, naturally. I have shot those guns enough to know my...

    Remington 5R

The shooter does have a great deal to do with shooting sub 1/2MOA but, if the rifle is not capable of doing it in its current condition, it does matter how good the shooter is. That's all I'm saying. I do agree, it takes skill to shoot sub 1/2MOA groups even with a weapon capable of doing it.

    Remington 5R

There is no sense in getting defensive about this. There are some advantages to the 5R rifles. Less stress on the bullet in the barrel, less fouling and, I would imagine, with less stress on the bullet, there is less heat bult up in the barrel. All of us who have been around a fair few years...

    Remington 5R

Not really unless you want a true mountain rifle. I've toted an old Model 70 African in 7mm RM around for 40 years that weighs out over 10.5 fully decked out and loaded.

    Remington 5R

This is true if your talking about top of the line rifles from each of the top companies. Some of the 2nd and third tier rifles can be easily and fairly cheaply made to shoot very well. I have a WeatherBug Vanguard in 270 Win that I won in a raffle that wouldn't shoot a 2"MOA. I refloated the...

    Brass manufacturer difference?

I have shot mostly Remington brass for nearly 40 years. I have a 7 RM that shoots 1/2MOA or under, depending on me. The 7mm it's what I started reloading for. I shoot an over book load that builds a lot of pressure and still get 5 it 6 reloads with them before I start having some splits start...

    Optics for aging eyes

I understand where you're coming from. Leupold Mark 4 Zeiss Conquest V6 A big portion of my rifles have Leupold glass but I do like the Zeiss Conquest V6 as well. Good Luck!!!

    New scope

Leupold has products with which ever focal plane you want. Do a little research on the product lines please before you start ditching a brand because it is "old school". The old dogs have taught the young guns a lot over the years, and are still developing and moving right along with newer...

    Kennetrek, Schnees, Crispi boots

I've been hunting in Danners for years and years. I currently have four styles of hunting/hiking boots and three pair of work boots. My hunters range from uninsulated hikers to mid weight pacs. The pacs are the only ones I've had to do any break-in on and it was probably more a matter of me...

Help, I recently realized I don't know how to shoot.

Everyone shoulders a rifle different when shooting in different positions and at different vertical angles. These very slight differences in shouldering cause the variances in MOA. Most of the comments here have already suggested practicing from whatever rest and position you normally are in...
