    783 Short Mag Rebarreling

Thanks for the great info dump, I really couldn't ask for more (other than a longer COAL factory mag of course . . but when aren't we left wanting one of those) Looks like you started with the same rifle I'm thinking of picking up, the Laminate Varmint isn't much of an upcharge over the base...

Looking at the latest crop of 6.5mm long range hunting bullets . . . what holds up to high speed impacts?

You might give a harder bullet, like a Barns a try. At sub 20 yards I've put a 165ttsx @ 3175MV through a decent buck, broadside angling back and down (elevated shooting position) Meat damage was minimal, exit hole was quarter sized, internals were devastated, buck was dead before it hit the...

Looking at the latest crop of 6.5mm long range hunting bullets . . . what holds up to high speed impacts?

This is one thing I was curious about. Many people gravitate to the heaviest option for the higher BC; but for middle ranges lighter offerings can sometimes have better drift #s. I hadn't bothered to run any #s through my calculator though, as I hadn't heard how effective the 129/130gr...

Looking at the latest crop of 6.5mm long range hunting bullets . . . what holds up to high speed impacts?

One of my favorite "bad weather" shooting lanes is 483 yards long, and they have a habit of walking out most often either in the 70-100 range or at 400+. The higher the starting velocity, the easier the wind is to manage at the far end. And then, just in general I have locations that stretch...

I've had those in mind as my backup bullet, if I don't like the results of the higher BC offerings then at least I know the old Nosler AB is a solid performer.

LRAB doesn't look too bad, 57% retention @ 2900, should be worth a shot. Disappointed with the ELDXs though, seems the interlock ring could use an upgrade.

I'll have to wait to see that one in action. Federal itself has released a series of images of a 200gr .308 that looks fairly devastated even at only 2350fps, yet American hunter has a series of images of a 130gr .264 that looks barely opened at 1900fps . . . seems they must have used different...

    783 Short Mag Rebarreling

Thanks for checking it out. Perhaps it will hold 3 with a bit of fiddling; the long action mags make it work, with I think the same depth of stock, I'll have to compare them. Seems odd to me that they don't do any short mags from the factory. But then, I still don't understand why various...

    783 Short Mag Rebarreling

Well, that is an interesting start. Can I ask you one thing . . . would you be good enough to see if 3 rounds can fit on the mag, or is two the limit?

Looking at the latest crop of 6.5mm long range hunting bullets . . . what holds up to high speed impacts?

I've seen some writing of the Nosler LRABs being soft and not holding together as well as the old Nos ABs, so I looked into the Hornady ELD-X, but then I saw a review that mentioned the jacket usually separated, despite the locking groove. Firing these bullets into large whitetail at 2800-3000...

    783 Short Mag Rebarreling

Curious if anyone has rebarreled one of the Remington 783s with a short mag chambering, Saum, PRC, WSM, something more exotic, whatever. I am just interested if it can be done and made to feed. If the standard bolt head can't be opened there is an aftermarket one available (bit pricy though)...

    Custom build for a teenager?

Excuse me if this has already been mentioned, but I didn't read all 4 pages. Savage makes a "light weight" series based on a standard model 10 action with as much metal removed as they felt prudent. They also make a "Lady Hunter" version. Common sense tells me that they should have a rifle with...

Rem 783 Varmint Modifications - 6.5 PRC, GAP, SAUM chamber reaming & magazine work

Hello again everyone, I'm not as new here as my first post makes me seem. I was quite active here about a decade ago, but life, women, kids happened, and I've been too broke to play for a while. . . .I've been getting by on Grand Dad's old hand me down rifle and still putting meet in the...
