    Best pump gun???

Amen to the grand Ithaca 37, much preferred in the old days in Saskatchewan over the model 12 Win, when long walks were the order in sharp tail hunting!

    Bullet failures

Any bullet though, that hits a big boned barrier like a ball joint is likely to deflect in any unpredictable direction, specially an angle shot as you described. Even a mono metal, partition or bonded. I shot once a whitetail buck at about 110 yards with my .300 wheatherby and 180 grain Hornady...

    Which caliber

Stick to a revolver, .357 Mag or larger. Barrel 4 inch or shorter. at that short range you can call self defence, headshots or spinal hits are pretty well a necessity.

    Best pump gun???

REM 870 Wingmaster Win M12 Ithaca 37 Browning BPS The Ithaca featherweight if a lot of walking is involved, is hard to beat, besides being a top quality item.

    Dumb Barrel Length Question?

Where aggressive bears are concerned at short distances, bullet placement is extremely important. To put a bullet on its skull or neck, I imagine your distance for precise shooting be in that 5-7 yards range, also an acceptable range for wildlife officials, for self defence. Remember unless you...

Your favorite cartridge based off .30-06?

.270 Winchester. Boringly efficient and effective, not Uber sexy looking ke some of the modern rounds, but doing the job with minimal fuss. Easy to load for, lots of accurate factory loads, flat shooting, what is there not to like?

    Round Steaks

How long do you age your elk meat before wrapping and packing? Hang in a crafty place 5-8 degrees Celsius for 3 weeks. If ventilation is difficult use a fan at low setting. Your round steaks will be yummy and tender!

New to me, Remington 788 in 308.

Nowadays, a lot of hunting rules are made by people with no hunting or shooting experience/knowledge. Besides there are a significant number of anti hunting officials like biologists in fish and wildlife departments. Young urban college graduates with little or no connection to country life and...

    6.5 PRC

We are on the same team, therefore……….. Yet, we have to police ourselves in discouraging excesses. Highly trained military snipers agree that much can and often does goes wrong with long range shots, due to unknown variables down range. In warfare, wounding is a desirable option, tying up enemy...

    Lightweight hunting rifle recommendations

I only have experience with Tikka and Sako. Quality out of the box. Here in Edmonton on the rifle ranges around us, Tikka reigns supreme for accuracy out of the box. Tikkas are the most common budget rifles. Savages are regarded well but lower quality for the money. Myself I bought a second hand...

    Moose calibre?

I used the 06 with 180 grain partition bullets and never needed anything else, all superb results. Accurate shot placement is the most important factor regardless of any caliber. I have experimented with 180 grain partitions vs 200 grain and could not find any differences. I guess 165 grain...
