    35 whelen

I'm sure it did show excessive pressure. The max load in the Speer No. 15 is 64.2 grains of CFE 223 for their 250 grain HotCor, and I hit pressure signs at about 63 grains with milsurp brass. Commercial brass is ok at 63 grains in both my rifles.

    35 whelen

Yes they do. You have to be careful near the max listings, though. The pressure on some of them seem to spike a little near their max listed loads, at least for me.

    35 whelen

I use RL15 for my Whelen, and I load to the old Speer and Lee manuals for it. The pre-2018 or so Lee and Speer manuals list a max of 59.5 grains of RL15 for the Speer 250 grain HotCor. At this charge, I get about 2670fps from my Remington 700 with a 24" barrel, with some primer flattening...

    Making 35 Whelen brass

I simply load the case normally after I have necked it up. I have my dies set to just touch the shoulder of the -06 case and then I check the case after trimming to see that it chambers with a slight crush fit. If it chambers, I just load the brass normally and fire it as if it were new brass...

    Making 35 Whelen brass

Lee has 35 Whelen dies with a tapered expander, but any 35 Whelen sizing die is designed to neck up 30-06 and will work. Any 30-06 brass will work for necking up, and just needs to be trimmed and uniformed at the neck mouth after expanding the neck. They currently have sets in stock, which is...

    Improving the 308 Win performance

The .308 Win is a very good, very versatile round. It just isn't a good round for shots past about 1,000 yards. I own three of them. But I also own several 30-06's and a couple of 300 winmags. If I want more than it offers, I don't try to make it into an -06. I just get out the -06.

    Improving the 308 Win performance

Fact Check: The longest .308/7.62x51 recorded verified kill was done in Iraq, and was about 1367 yards. "The longest confirmed kill shot with a 7.62x51 round (which is an equivalent round in virtually all respects excepting chamber pressure, which is slightly lower), was made at a distance of...

blown primers are pressure issues. They are pressure issues every time they happen.

    Improving the 308 Win performance

I use a 35 Whelen, a 300 Winmag or a 30-06. If you're getting 3,000fps from a .308 Win with a 150gr. bullet, its probably above SAAMI pressures. I can get over 2850fps with a 30-06 and 165 grain Speers or 168 grain Sierra Matchkings in a 24" barrel. The right powders will give me over 2600...

Best caliber for Colorado Mule Deer.

Yes, it can. Altitude will cause your cartridge to shoot flatter. You're living near sea level. I'm East of Colorado springs. My house sits at 7,200 feet. Your rifle will shoot around 8 to 10 inches flatter here that down around 1,000 feet. At 9,000 feet, you get a few inches less drop...

    Learing to shoot light rifles.

I use a Caldwell shooting bag and a shooting sock filled with rice under the butt. I shoot a Ruger MKII in 30-06 with a thin 22" barrel, a 30-06 in an 03A3, a couple of 300 winmags, two 35 Whelens (very heavy recoil with 250 grain Speers-which I found on Midway Friday as Factory Overruns, and...

Are you at La Junta now, or still near the Springs? We could try some hand loads in your rifle and see how that works. I reload for the .308 and have access to a 600 yard range. I have lots of brass, bullets and powders suitable.

I agree with AZ82New. If your cold barrel shot is going where its supposed to and the second shot hits within 1" to 1.2", that's pretty good for a thin barrelled rifle from the factory. You're getting the first three shots to go inside 1.2" or so. See what it does at 300 yards and if its...

    Learing to shoot light rifles.

My 30 cals mostly like the Speer HotCor 180, the Sierra GK 165, 180 and 200gr, and Hornaday 168 grain Amax or Match bullets. The pickiest rifle is the Ruger M77MKII, which really likes the Nosler 180gr. Ballistic Tip and the Sierra Gameking or ProHunter in 180grain. All these bullets will...
