my shooting partner and i have been struggling with a similar problem. we both have custom rifles bulit with quality components in 338RUM and EDGE, shooting 300smks @ 2780 and 2850...both shoot 3/8 to 1/2 moa VERY consistantly at the very comfortable temps around 45-70 degrees. the problem shows...

i recently talked to scott barish @ Libery Optics and he shared many pros and cons with me about the spotters. it would probably be worth your time to have a chat with him to find a good compromise with weight, clarity, size and cost. greg

in my limited experience when sorting 300 smk's. i had about 1/3 be within .002 for bearing surface length. the majority of the rest was in a batch that encompassed .004....the thing that surprised me was i ended up with about 6% of the bullets that were much shorter and much longer. those ended...

just a question...are you sorting your smks for bearing surface length or trimming the meplats. even having good vertical at 1000, you might be having velocity spreads compounding on you at this very long distance. just a thought ;)

the thought about calibrating the device to show true level went through my head already, but since 20 moa of slope is actually only 0.3333 degrees...i am pretty sure that it is good enough for anything i would be using it for:)

i was actually referring to the horus vision aci that is fixed in its orientation on the scope or rail. i could be wrong, but i don't see the difference in a flat rail or a 20 min rail making that much difference when the resolution of the hash marks is the size that it is. thanks for thoughts...

i'm not trying to be smart...but do you really think it needs to be calibrated for the 20min base? how many degrees would a person be off and how many degrees does the line on the aci cover up. the aci are pretty coarse and i doubt that there would be enough resolution on the gauge to notice 20min.

hopefully all the 338 AX owners are out filling the freezer. i'll keep waiting sorta patiently.:)

i was faced with the same issues a few years ago. my montana was chambered in the 325, wouldn't shoot an 8" @ 300. numerous problems were found throughout the rifle. needless to say i am just down the road from their tech support building and took it in. they questioned my shooting ability...

i would be pleased to find out how fast everyone is getting their 300gr SMKs to go out of a 30" tube with good brass life. i know they can be pushed fast, but is assume it is detrimental to the life of some very expensive Lapua brass. i am hoping for 8-10 reloads @2950-3000fps. Is this...

Can anyone confirm if the 338 Norma uses a 20 degree shoulder angle like the Lapua has? Thanks greg

i own a kimber 8400 montana in 325wsm. with 200gr nosler accubond i am getting 3050fps. after they replaced the barrel...accuracy was quite good. with the same load in a friends kimber, he gets 2975. guess all barrels aren't created equal.

FYI: 338 Lapua brass from Connecticut is $199/100. not too bad of a price

When I ordered the action, I had the lapua in mind and had it built with a .750" bolt. Just need to open it up to a larger face when it is time. The extra speed and good brass life is appealing for sure.
