Best overall powders for 25 06

I use 4831, what's left of an old barrel of Hodgden's surplus, very good stuff.

Need advice on light a light recoiling hunting rifle!

One fact missing here is the law--that .22 anything is not legal for big game in some states.

    Old powder ok??

I'm still using what's left of a 50# cardboard barrel marked 4831 (not H4831) from Hodgden that was shipped via Railway Express Agency.

    Alpine Supreme Mauser build

You haven't said if you have a particular use in mind, but may I suggest a 25-06 stock or improved. With modern bullets and a twist suited to them It will be easier on your shoulder and wallet than some of the others mentioned here and more than adequate for mulies and antelope.

    Custom build

Take a look at the Weatherby Vanguard or the Howa , both available in 30-06 ( https://weatherby.com/store/vanguard-laminate-sporter), rebarrel if you want, change trigger if desired. You might just be surprised at the glass you would be able to add and still stay within your budget.

    SAFETY REMINDER!!!

I have shot a lot of squib loads using very fast powder and cast lead projectile always using a wad to hold the powder against the primer, great for practicing shouldering and trigger control with a real live round.

    Howa Specialist Gunsmith

Howa is imported by Legacy Arms here in Reno. Have you contacted them to see if they can help.? I know that they do warranty work here and have a very large warehouse and smiths to do the work.

    Weatherby Vanguard

I have one of these. I bought it instead of the Howa because of the increased barrel length. I doesn't hurt that the stock has a higher cheek rest too.

Berger Twist Rate Stability Calculator (need help)

1:10 is the standard twist for the 257 Roberts. My Roberts shoots all (87 to 120) well with that twist. I built a 25-06 with 1:12 specifically for 87 gr. bullets and it will not stabilize long 120 gr. bullet (Hornady 120 hollow point).

Anyone here fans of the 25-06?

The first Rifle I built is a 25-06 in 1965. I had an 03A3 from Monkey Ward I got for $17.95 and shot it as 30-06 for a couple of years and then had it rebarreled to 25-06. Because It was still a wildcat it is marked 25-06 Neidner. Sporterized by Hobaugh in Montana with a Fajen stock and a 30"...

    First custom gunstock

There's a reason stockermakers don't use softwood for stocks. It splinters, splits and is impossible to get a decent finish on. Oak is very heavy. Stick with the tried and true, there's a reason for the popularity of walnut. It is lighter than maple and takes a beautiful finish.

    Reloading Equipment

There has been a lot of good advice on here but a lot of the info requires one to buy new gear, I would look into the used market for anything that is not the newest, latest gizmo. Good measuring instruments are available that will do a credible job without the cost of brand new. Estates sell...
