I can never figure out why anyone will do an ai with anything shorter than 24”. Why not just shoot a standard 280 and burn less powder? It feels to me like people just want to say they shoot a 280 AI rather than say they shoot a 280.
full confession though I’ve ben a 280 guy for 35 years and...
after discovering Athlon a few years back, I now own 4 scopes 1 pair of binos and a spotter. I've also sold off all but 1 Vortex scope and will probably never buy another if that gives you any idea how I lean.
I had an old shot out .243 so I had it re barreled in a 1-8" twist 243 and went to 25" tube. It flat out shoots the ELDM 108s and at a tad over 3000 fps it gets me out to 1000. Its not a gun I hunt with just a toy for steel at long range but I absolutely love the thing.
I've had a load for my .300 Wby change a bunch by going from one powder lot to another. I was using RL 19 in a load and the next time I loaded the same load it was probably 10% hotter than before. Blew a primer and scared the crap out of me. Velocity went up 200 fps and the bolt had to be...
If you get a chance take a look at the Athlon Ares spotter. Not a lot more than your price and very impressive optic. Also spend money on a tripod. A great scope on a cheap tripod will disappoint everyone. A good tripod helps any scope live up to its potential
Typically just load to SAMMI. I used to do customer service at Barnes and have seen it hundreds of times where people try and load close to lands and have poor accuracy. Backing off can shrink groups quickly
In response to you reloading with Barnes bullets, getting closer to the lands will probably hurt your accuracy not help it. Mono bullets like to have some jump before coming into contact with the lands because the bullet is harder. Thats not to say you wont be able to get better accuracy with...
just go with a .280 rem. The AI in a 22" barrel doesn't give you a good powder burn. It does, however, let you call it an AI and burn more powder without any real world advantage. I've shot a standard .280 rem for 30 years and have loved it. I am about ready to rebarrel it and when I do I will...
