ATACR is an amazing optic, and won't leave you wishing you had anything else. PMII is also a gold standard. However, I think the outdated reticle designs are a really limiting factor. Plus, the illumination tumor in the back would bother me some. These are both personal/subjective...

There are some newer options that have better ballistic programs and better interface with other supporting devices, but they don't have Leica glass yet. I have some HD-B's and wouldn't trade them for anything else.

If you have to ask, you must not have spent any time with one. I won't shoot a rifle without a suppressor any more. And yes, that means I chose to shoot rifles chambered in rounds that do better out of shorter barrels. I never have to worry about doing more significant damage to my hearing...

If you're wanting to train to shoot targets at longer distances, you picked the wrong rifle. You'd be better off focusing on learning the fundamentals with the 308, then pull out the cannon when you've got a yeti or mastadon that needs to be shot.
