I have 2 98’s custom built rifles. First is in 22-250 with i think a shilian pensil barrel that i made a 1002 yard kill on a parriedog shooting hand loads. Second has a shaw 1 1/4” barrel that is 26 inches long ( barrel alone weighs 9pounds ) in 6.5 creedmoor.
Where is home for you? I hunted pd for about 7 years in north dakota . Traveling from southern indiana. I used 17 hmr ,204,22-250. My 204 was good to 600 yards. Now 70 years old and lost a leg so no more trips. But still have 700 plus loaded rounds of 32 and 34 grain loads wanting to be shot...
Killed my first p-dog with at-15 in 223. Next year I took a 204 and never switched back. I shot 32 grain bullets out to 600 yards . And yes it was windy in southern North Dakota.
Made my longest kill shot on a prairie dog (1002 yards) on a Mauser 98 action with pencil barrel shooting 40 grain Molly coated bullets. 35 mile per hour wind at my back. Love that gun! Wish I could still go dogging.
I was at an estate auction a couple of years ago and got 7 one pound cans. I had never used it but heard a lot of chatter on sites about pixie dust performance. Cost me a lot about 12.50 to 14.00 a pound.
If I remember correctly I paid 17.00 for out of state license for the year. We would go for a week and burn up 3000 rounds. I used 17 hmr, 204, and 22-250. We put a hurting on them. Lol . But I did make a 1002 yard kill . And I shot. Better then 60%
It’s been a couple of years since I last went but we used to go to southern North Dakota near a little town called marmarth . Hunted grasslands just outside of town. We also hunted a lot of private ranches in the area.
I have hunted most of the animals that I wanted to. Only bucket list is cararabo that I can’t seem to be able to spell today. Just turned 70 and lost a leg this year, so it will remain there for one of you youngun.
