    22x47 Lapua reloading advice needed.

Please check your math on the 100 yard target. You used .264 for the bullet size instead of .224. Still impressively precise!!!

    What’s your spookiest hunting experience?

Back in the '80s, I was running a vegetative transect just South of the Pease River in North Central Texas. I had two partners walking with me to record the wildlife browse and grazing plants. I unwittingly stepped on a rather large western diamondback rattler just about six inches from his...

What is your best deer rifle

Mauser 98 rebarreled to 6.5x55 Swede. 123 gr. Amax in front of IMR 4831. 2 Texas Whitetail bucks 2 years, both dropped like a sack of spuds at 150-175 yards.

Doubting what I saw at the LGS

I shot a 25 gr. 17 Remington at a AR 500 Ram at 100 yards years ago. Thought I missed but drilled a neat 1/4-inch hole in it. Was banned from using that rifle at any following shoots.

    Your SHTF mandatory gun list.

At my age, with more titanium in me than on my shootin' irons, I'll be bugging in place with everything from my Ruger 22 to my 300 WM, plus a few 12 gauges. All I have to do is close my access gates, and S will HTF when someone attempts to unlock the gates.

    Do You Shoot Rifle Competition?

At a shade over 70, most of my competitive shooting is International Running Target, Charging Boar, Small Bore Silhouette (Rifle and Pistol), and Know your limits. I used to shoot High Power Rifle and CMP matches, but have trouble getting in the positions I did when I was younger.

At what point are you done with load development?

Yes, I was comfortable with the shot placement. The .243 was loaded with 70 grain hollow point match bullets... My memory has faded on the powder and charge. In my original post, I alluded to the bullet hitting no bone, no spine hits. It just ruptured the aorta and hit the diaphragm, which is...

Rifles we wish we've never sold, and WHY!

In the early '80's I acquired a Tang safety Ruger Model 77 with a varmint barrel in .308. With the proper loads, it would hold one-hole groups in the .2's consistently. I even took it up to Whittington Center with Redfield Globe front and Olympic rear sights to shoot well (for me) in High...

POLL: Preferred Combination of Turrets and Reticle?

Are high powered scopes really necessary for hunting?

I've shot high power rifle at Whittington several times with apature front and rear, using magnification to confirm spotter disks for shot placement. As an amateur, I couldn't even match the groups that the better marksmen were shooting at up to 1000 yards with the same sights. As long as your...

At what point are you done with load development?

The bullet got to his diaphragm, rupturing the aorta along the way. I used a 70 Gr. Solid base Nosler Match Hollowpoint. This was 27 years ago, and I'm afraid I don't remember the loading details. I was sure I would hit where I aimed with that rifle and load combination in .243 Win.

At what point are you done with load development?

I was presented a "Texas Heart Shot" once. Great mule deer buck, the best I've ever seen, gave me the only opportunity I could get. I took it, using a 243 Winchester 70 gr HP at 100 yards. I left no hole, no bruised meat, just a mass of clotted blood in the abdomen. He dropped as soon as I...

At what point are you done with load development?

Call me a nerd. I look at the powder that will give me as close to 100% case capacity, giving the most velocity with the bullet I want to use. I then start on the starting load recommended by loading manuals, then follow the OCW method described by Dan Newberry. I love bugholes, so I try to...
