Texas surprise: Elk I took in Madison county Texas

I know you are from Texas, and smoking meat is probably second nature to you. That being said, if you find a way to smoke elk ribs and they don't turn out like a 50 year old leather wallet left in the sun for a year I will be amazed.

    Steve’s Bull Elk 7PRC 170 HHT

No kidding. Gun cases might be hard to find for that one.

    Low recoil deer caliber

I just skipped to the end, so I will contribute my .02. My daughter turned ten this June and eligible to hunt deer for the first time this year. She is on the smaller side, about 4'6" and 70lbs I would say. She has been shooting a .22 for about 2 years, and has quite a few gophers under her...

    MT Elk Regulations Should Change!

Haha. I always got a kick out of that too. I am not sure what world they live in, but I have never seen so many hunters in my now 35 years of being in the woods. It's insane out there. I have watched the once incredible greater yellowstone herd (which primarily existed on public land) become...

    Absolute Hammer load data

Thought I would share this very soft recoiling load I put together for my daughter. It really is fun to shoot and has recoil similar to a .223, which is great for a kid. 6.5 Creedmoor 20" Tikka, Proof Research Barrel Lapua Brass LRP CCI BR2 large rifle primer 37.5G Varget 110 Hammer Hunter...

    Montana 482 Sheep

I have been on a few hunts there. Both tag holders scored on nice rams, a mid 180s type ram and 190ish ram. Both great hunts. In my limited sheep experience, I find it to be more about the ram that you like. I like the tighter curl type rams with lamb tips. My buddies like the broomed off...

    6.5 Creedmoor 110 Hammer Hunters

Going to load these up for my daughters gun. I am more interested in the lower recoil than higher velocities.

    6.5 PRC for Aoudad??

No Kidding! My Aoudad hunt was my first ever hunt that I actually "paid" for. Changes your mindset a little.

    6.5 PRC for Aoudad??

One old scar and one new one. After I shot it, it managed to take a full blown nose dive off a pretty substantial cliff and got a fresh one. I am okay with it though, will make the mount unique.

    Hammer Hunter Terminal Performance Elk

Haha. Except for Aoudads! Shot an aoudad a few weeks ago and was informed their vitals are much further forward. Shot it right through the shoulder and the thing was dead in about 5-10 seconds.

    6.5 PRC for Aoudad??

I got back from my TX trip and apparently shot a nice ram. The reason I say apparently is that it was pretty much the first ram I saw. I passed on it for a few days and the guy whose place we were on was beside himself. I looked at some other sheep before I decided to go and try and find the...

Badlands Precision Bullets thread - From BC to terminal ballistics

That is crazy to me that such a small difference in seating depth change could make such a big difference. You could rack up a hell of a component bill running such minute adjustments. I would probably need to invest in a better set of calipers...

Badlands Precision Bullets thread - From BC to terminal ballistics

That was the issue, usually my outliers were the cold bore shots. Some where 1.5-2 MOA out from the center of the group. I shoot an 18" Proof Sendero. All my hunting rifles have Proof Sendero contours, the longest barrel I have on a hunting rifle is 22" the rest are 20". Part of the reason...

Badlands Precision Bullets thread - From BC to terminal ballistics

60 thou. Tried 10 (barely fit in mag), 30, 50, 60, 80. Most of the bullets I have shot in the past aren't very sensitive to seating depth, so this is a new one for me. I tried at least (3) 5 shot groups and there would usually be a couple in tight, then a couple that were pretty severe...

Badlands Precision Bullets thread - From BC to terminal ballistics

Made it out this am to validate at distance, was excited to see some results from 4-800 yards. Long story short, I am back to the drawing board for loads. The first time out I shot groups at 100 and 200 and had decent accuracy, probably 5/8 MOA. Not the tightest groups I have shot, but not...
