270 Win For Long Range Shooting

That's nice to know; I'm pushing the 175 Matrix at 2993 FPS with my current accuracy load in my .270 AI.
I just purchased a Savage 10 FCNS and I'm getting under 1 MOA at 200 yards with factory ammo during break-in.

Wonder now that Nosler has their 150gr Accubond LR with its .625 BC, how it would stack up against the Matrix 165gr? Gotta be close the same sorta numbers I am thinking. Either will turn a 270 into an honest 600 yd gun on Deer sized game.

The ALR is running .543 G1 BC not the advertised, it's hard to beat the 165 Matrix!!

Thanks for that update on the actual update on that BC of the LR Nosler................. why do these manufactures insist on inflating those numbers. .543 sounds more like it

Funny that Up Side Down Wrong Dave tried his best to discredit the 270 Winchester as a long range rig.
Skilled shooters take on the challange to show the capabilities of what was built into the cartridge many years ago.
Our group of shooters are always pushing the limits of long range shooting with standard size cases,,, from 243's on up to the 30/06's and everything in-between.
Point blank on out past the 1500 meter mark and beyond for "some" of the cartridges.
5 of our shooters up here in the North are keen on the 270's,,, I'm in the 30 caliber bracket,,, the one thing that all of us have learned over the years.
10% dialed in rifle with 90% shooter with eye and hand to make it happen

The long road is leading me home...
I scaled back to mid range rifles a few years ago since my Punch-Junk magnum rifle days are done... I did a long throat 30/06 Sherman which was working good unit I slowly scaled up into the 200/ 208gr bullets,,, I found out that my shoulder and body didn't take kindly to them...
So this spring I had a 6.5 A-square / or known as a 6.5/06 built,,, the halfway between the 25/06 and 270,,, what a dream to shoot,,, I have a sneaking suspicion that I'll be lucky to pull off 1700 to 2000 shots """if""" I tap it kool on barrel temps,,, that's not saying that there might be a bit of life after that...
Anyways,,, I see that the 270 Winchester cartridge will be the next pipe on my 2 rifles,,, 1 in sports'ter the other in medium heavy barrel,,, I can split the difference of the 130gr to 150 bullet by jumping on board with the 140 grain'ers... That's what I'm running in my A-square right now...
Next to nill for powder,,, low recoil,,, and a good fight path down range,,, that and the frugal bullets to shoot in the off season... Ha...
The other benefit is that my friends have all the loading dies and extras I can borrow off them to get started,,, she's been a long road of good times,,, I'm pretty sure that the old school 270's will fill these needs...

Careful there Don, i Sence a bit of senility might be setting in with talk of shooting a 270 to those distances. Lol
But then I don't believe you mentioned anything about hitting anything.
Fact is though I had my first experience of long range deer hunting by watching a guy kill a deer with a 270.
I'm no doubt older than you, as i was 20 years old in 1955 when I witnessed the incident. A group of us were driving on a dirt mountain road in the northern most part of Clinton Co. PA.
We had to stop our vehicle due to a guy laying prone right on the road. He was shooting at a deer way off laying down. He had brass laying all over the road, and after a couple more shots he quit and stood up, out of shells. Apperently the deer didn't even realize he was a target.
Anyway, 2 other guys were standing there watching thru spotting scopes, and when the guy quit one of them asked if he minded if he shot. The guy said I'm done, so go ahead if you want to shoot at him.
The guy then yanked the back seat out of his car and layed it on the road. He then pulled out a standard model 70 with a Unertle scope on it. His buddy watched while he shot, and i cant say wether there was any communication between them, but i assume there was. Anyway on the third shot the deer was hit and died right in his bed.
I remember asking him how far it was and he said 700 yds.
I don't know how he knew that, but about 20 years later i bought a Barr&Stroud range finder, as i was then myself involved in L/R.
One of the first things i did was check the distance of that shot. And surprisingly the guy was spot on the money as for the distance. And yes i bought the Barr& Stroud from Harry Kieser in Williamsport. Lol
But the biggest irony of all, is that 50 years later, almost to the day, at age 70, i killed my first and only PA black bear from a lookout on the side hill directly above that spot on that road.
700 YDS, and within about 100 yds to the left of where i had watched that buck kill.
In all those years, i only know one guy whose word i would trust, claiming to have killed a buck at 1 mile in PA.
And that was an old 1000 yd shooter by name of Hubie Hakes, with a 338x378 using a 250 gr SMK.

Nice story Indeed! There had to be some wind involved or and he walked them rounds in , very hard to see bullet impact with out great glass on rifle and spotting scope ,yes the 270 wcf is very capable with the right shooter & spotter ,easier done with a 270 wsm, and that's not useing a fast twist with the very best bullets available ,it's almost a chip shot shooting that 250 Sierra mk,in that big 338/378 magnum ,not that I own one but have shot my 338 w/mag with the same weight bullet .
