338 SIN Testing

The difference could be the 225 Cutting Edge bullet I was using. I am driving them on average 75-100 fps faster across the board in all rifles than the lead core bullets I was using. I have been extremely busy and haven't had time to get on here much, my appologies.

I bet you will get it dialed in by elk season. Good luck with it and the elk.

I followed your load with the cutting edge bullets. I wonder if the magnaport is reducing any velocity? Ill tinker with it again next week and let you know how it comes about.

Any updated information on the 338 SIN? Load data? or any other SIN cartridges that were talked about?

Any data for QuickLoad would also be nice if someone has done the work there.

Sorry you've reached a dead end there. I know my interactions with Devin, more than a year ago, his job had him out of town a whole lot. When I was at his shop...he did show me a prototype round...it was either a .257 Sin or 6.5mm Sin....so he was still experimenting with that parent case.

As far as specific loads.....Guess if you are going to use the .338 Sin.....I would start with .330 Dakota data and work up from there. For the smaller caliber Sin rounds.....I wouldn't have the foggiest idea where to start or look for loads.
I have a membership to AmmoGuide and they list 39 loads for the .330 Dakota.

Wish I could share load data with you....but as soon as my custom .338 Sin was finished...I ran into health problems...so I've never had the pleasure of shooting the round. An she's been for sale since .

The only other recommendation is to call him again and leave a voice message.

I will have to do some work with QuickLoad and see what I come up with. Time is always an issue and was hoping someone by now had done some of the leg work for a good starting place. I was looking at running the 285gr but found nothing to start load work with.

Hi guys,

I had good luck with rl19 and the 338 sin, this carteidge did better with faster powders than i would have ezpectes. I remember reading that it was because of its super effecient powder burning interior design. I used the hornady 225s for load research and then the cutting edge 225s to finalize.


My rifle did not handle the powder charge that Long Ranger reported. I think i was 84 or 85 grains to his reported 86

Velocity was 3100fps.

I was planning on going the 285 gr. route as well.....so, I went with a 1:9.5" twist versus the 1:10" normally found for this round. I had a several message discussion with Long Time Long Ranger. He was essentially the first to use this round in the field. His experimentation led him to conclude the CE 225 gr. bullets were the best performing for this round. The data he ran suggested they would easily outperform the 285's....especially at longer ranges. So, if you have a 1:10" twist barrel...you might very well consider trying the 225 gr. CE bullets.

Good luck....Hopefully your frustration will quickly turn to satisfaction with this round.

Just start with 330 Dakota data and go from there. I've been running a 338/375 Ruger for about 4 years and that's the base line that I used. Case volume is pretty close to the Sin, possibly a little lower. I don't remember the exact dimensions of the 338 Sin, but it's an improved Dakota case so you should be able to work up a bit above max 330 Dakota loads.

My work has been mostly in an 18" Striker barrel with 250 grain bullets. H4350 is still my go to powder, but Reloader 17 has given some impressive velocities as well. I'd start working with powders in the 4350, 4831, and Reloader 22 range and see how those work for you.

I'm not sure where he is...I noticed he wasn't posting as well. I do know he's been a big fan of .338 cal. rounds for some time. He probably has evaluated most rounds in this caliber. His impressions of the .338 Sin in the field were positive.....so that speaks volumes to me...since I remember reading that one of his favorite rounds is the 340 Weatherby.

Hope we have more posts from LTLR...he's got tons of experience and knowledge to share.

Thanks for the info. I did a volume check and plugged that number into the 330 Dakota on QuickLoad and got some starting numbers that seem safe and reasonable. Just have to find more time to reload and get to the bench.
