270 WSM popping out of feed rails, Ruger tang safety

I just had a Ruger rebarreled to 270 WSM. It was a 7 Rem Mag. With rounds in the mag when I push the bolt forward the casing will pop out of the feed rails and stick straight out. The bolt doesn't seem to be catching the case head very well either.

Any ideas...???

This is not an easy fix! Find a gunsmith who can deal with the problem. And believe me, it can be a problem. Center feed is the best and easiest cure, problem is, nobody I know of makes any aftermarket magazine parts for the Rugers. Might check and see if someone, like CDI, makes detachable bottom metal where you could use AIC magnum magazines. Even those may have feed lips that are too short to control the WSM. I won't do a conversion, any more, to WSM on any action not already designed to use WSM cartridges already. It's just too much bother and takes too much time, and I'm never really completely satisfied. I can make 'um work,, just not as slick as I'd like. Got too much stock work to do to mess with stuff like this. The WSMs are way over rated, IMO, anyway. "A marketing ploy by a dying company, that died anyway" (even though I do own reamers)

You can try bending the lips on the magazine box so that more of the cartridge case is under the rail, but that may lower the case so that less is showing for the bolt to pick-up. No simple answer. Needs to have experienced eyes on it.

I didn't think it'd be an easy fix. I was hoping it would work great since the action is kinda short anyway...dang it!

adam32,

This should have been the responsibility of the gunsmith who took on the job. If he didn't know the fix, he should have turned the job down.

The easiest way to solve this problem is to add a spacer at the rear of the magazine box. Then use a Ruger short action follower and spring.

There will need to be some adjustments to the rails and this will take trial and error fitting. You should expect to pay for both the expertise and time to get it right. Your next gunsmith will need several dummy rounds from you to do the fitting and feeding.

Regards.

+1

Center feed is the best way to set up any Short mag. it is not bad if you go from a Remington SAUM
(Short action ultra mag) to a WSM or the other way around, but when you rely on the action rails
of a action set up for another cartridge to hold the short mags, You are in for trouble.

If you go this route, please update and let us know if it fits your Tang Safety maybe with pics of the actual bottom metal. I looked at the PTG website and it looked more like a drawing of the bottom metal and magazine.

I am curious if it is for a M77 3 *** safety or a M77 with Tang Safety. According to Ruger they are not compatible.

Maybe one of the Gunsmiths that are on this thread may have experience with it.

Hope it works. I will be looking at it also if it does.
