.300 Norma magnum for hunting??

Does anyone here use the new .300 Norma mag for hunting?

That cartridge seems to have great potential for accuracy, not to mention a bit flatter trajectory than my beloved .300 Win mag.

I think I'd like a rifle in that cartridge with a 1:9 twist for the heavier bullets. Maybe even get a bit more distance before it goes trans-sonic.

The 300 norma is an awesome hunting round combined with a 230 grain berger your talking bad medicine for critters.

I had a snowy mtn rifles 300 norma for awhile and it was super accurate and awesome to shoot. Unfortunately a fella going through our shooting class fell in love with it and made me an offer I couldn't refuse I really think that for hunting it is an awesome choice.

Like having a 300rum that fits large bullets in a magazine and uses less powder not to mention more efficient. Id say one would be correct to call it a good hunting caliber.

No offense but.... that statement is a load of bs

there is absolutely no comparison , the 308 Win and '06 are great cartridges but pale in performance at any range

it's like comparing the 45 ACP to the 454 Casull

1. The 230 gr Berger Tactical and Hybrid tactical bullets are target bullets and unsuitable for hunting. They DO meet the Geneva Convention for non-expanding bullets and as such are used in the new XM 2010 .300 Win mag sniper rifle made by Remington Defense.

In actual fact I have several boxes of 230 gr. Berger Tactical Hybrid bullets.
One box states:
"Specifically Designed for Tactical Applications in the XM 2010."
"For Best Results in .300 Win. Mag. Load to COAL of 3.600" to 3.650". "
"G1 BC - .711 G7 BC = .364"

This is an exact quote, misplaced capital letters and all.

2. Berger and others do make great .30 caliber hunting bullets 200 gr. and above. I just wanted to see what was considered a good long range .30 cal bullet and if anyone was using them in the .300 Norma mag.

I'm now doing a ballistic comparison of the .300 Norma mag. and the .300 RUM.
I feel the Norma round, with its shorter body and more sharply angled shoulder will be the most accurate. That's why bench rest shooters have used cartridges built like this.

3. General Dynamics likes this cartridge so well they produced a medium machine gun using the .300 Lapua mag. that is only a bit heavier than the lightened standard 7.62 machine gun and lighter than the old standard 7.62 M240 with less recoil due to clever engineering. Naturally the ammo load will be heavier but it's a crew served gun and the ammo load is shared. With this round a 2,000 meter beaten area is entirely possible and that is nice when shooting in places like Afghanistan in longer range firefights. This is sorta like a boxer having a 2 inch longer reach than his opponent.

OP I think a 300 norma would be a great hunting round, plenty of speed and power.

There are other options than the 230berger while not as sexy the 200gr accubond is a proven killer that ad barnes has the new LRX bullet in 200 grains has a b.c of .545 I believe, at I'm guessing 3300fps no big game animal will put up too much of an argument from either one of those two

what is there to know besides the facts ?

ballistically superior firepower is undeniable !

I doubt the '06 or 308 Win can generate 3100+ fps with a 215 gr Berger , a proven long range hunting bullet ,
as for accuracy ... sure the 308 Win is a seriously accurate cartridge but so is the 300 Norma Mag,
with less dialing at any distance , trajectory or windage and more energy downrange

if you bring up recoil then I will roll my eyes and forget this conversation ever happened !

Im also curious as to what point your making. Ballistically the 06 and the 308 are left in the dust. Cost and recoil is your only argument.

The 215 & 230 Berger Hybrid Target projectiles make fantastic hunting projectiles, with their high BCs, especially at Norma Mag velocities
