What reamer would you guys recommend for a 300WM hunting rifle build & premium factory hunting ammo in the 180-200 grain range???

Thanks!!

All you need is a SAAMI spced reamer.

There are several good reamer manufactures to choose from. Manson, PT&G, Clymer to name a few.

Your Smith may have his favorite and as long as you don't get tricky, you will do fine.

I want to run something by you and anyone else that cares to comment.

The SAAMI chamber dept for a 300 WM is 2.9545. The bullet I want to use is the 215gr Berger and my Mark V magazine will let the cartridge with a COAL of 3.6 work. This load with a COAL of 3.6 measures 2.835 at the ogive.

My question is could I have my smith use a SAAMI spaced reamer but instead of running it in to the 2.9545 have him stop short at 2.845 leaving me with .010 jump to start load development with? Would that .100 short be a bad deal or create any danger? Just been knocking this around in my head and would like the hear some opinions. Have not ran this by my smith yet.

Thanks.

Stopping short will not change seating depth. It just makes the head space under spec. You may not be likely to get the bolt shut on the brass and part of the brass will be unsupported.

A mark 5 mag box should hold 3.7 OAL. Mine all do.

Don't even try to get 'fancy' if you'll be shooting factory loads. I'm currently "tusslin'" with one I built to minimum head space dimentions (GO gauge + a .002" steel shim and the bolt won't close). It'll except my handloads built using new Nosler brass, but won't except every factory loaded round I try. Some will chamber, some won't even come close to chambering. These factory rds. were manufactured by Remington & Winchester, and are of current manufacture. The chamber won't except full length re-sized brass fired in another rifle. No surprize there. There's just too much variation in the size of factory produced ammo to expect a tight, but in spec chamber, to except any and all of it. My solution to my problem, as my customer isn't a reloader,,,,,, increase head space toward the middle of the tolerance...... Not an 'ideal' situation, IMO. "Everyone wants to 'drive nails',,,,,,, not everyone is willing to custom taylor their ammo to their rifle to do so."

OK got it...stopping short makes everything short. Thanks for that. So I would need a reamer built if I want to get to the lands? With the 3.7 COAL the loads run through the rifle without problems?

My apologies the OP not trying to hijack the thread

3.7" works fine in my Mark 5's. Not sure on a 700. I could cut it for a 3.990" Wyatt box and then you would have tons of room. Wyatt has a 3.825" that would work too.

A 215gr Berger has a nose length of .905". The length from the base of the cartridge to the ogive will be the cartridge OAL minus .905".

Just seated a 215gr Berger to a COAL of 3.7. The overall length to the Ogive is 2.928 The SAAMI chamber being 2.9545 leaves a difference of 0.0265. I can live with that and start load development right there with .027 jump if the 3.7 will work in that magazine.

Thanks for the help you guys. Appreciate it.

Best reamers are made by......???

I think I might purchase a new one to use on my 300WM build - a fresh new reamer can't hurt!!

Take your pick! Reamers made by the known makers are like barrels made by the known makers, there is no "best". How many chambers on your 'old' 300WM reamer? If it's been taken care of it'll cut many, many perfect chambers as long as the one driving it knows what they're doing. I own several with well over a dozen chambes on 'um, ad they're still going strong. Chambering reamers can be sharpened a couple of times, if necessary. Why buy a 'new' one when, for a third the cost, you can get the one you have re-sharpened? As long as you don't let Bubba, down the road, do it, it'll be right back to specs.

I don't have a reamer at this point...was thinking a buying one to give to my gunsmith to use when chambering my rifle.

PT&G??

JGS??
