New Zealand hunting

I go to New Zealand every 5 years or so because my wife used to live there and my wife's sister still lives there. I got to thinking today since I go up there every 5 years, why have I not gone hunting up there!

Of course, it would have to be guided so I was wandering if any Kiwis could post up on this thread with a good guiding service. Private land hunting is good but no high fence stuff for me. The two hunts that I am interested in are the Red Stag and Tahr. I don't need a huge Stag to make me happy either.

I found two guides services that look pretty good but one seems to cheap to be true but who knows.

The first guide service is:
Gary Herbert's New Zealand Hunting
It is pretty darn expensive but seems really legit. They accommodate just about everything.


The next one is:
Big Game Hunting in New Zealand - Sunspots Safaris
This one seems really cheap for what they offer. Round trip airfare is even included in their pricing.

Let me know what you guys think. Would be extremely helpful if any Kiwis could chime in with their knowledge if possible.

Oh yea...and long range friendly would be very good.

You can do it without a guide. In most areas and with most species they don't have seasons. They are wide open for numbers and time of year.

The south islands West Coast is the place to go, find a local sort out chopper(James Scott) hut out of D.O.C huts,if your after Thar and not wanting a winter coat(Hard going in winter) try Whataroa.

Kiwis are very keen to help people interested in the outdoors, plus its just darn cool to share what we take for granted and see it through someone else's eyes. I'd offer to take you but I generally end up just taking my rifle for a long walk....it's lucky fish are easy to catch or I'd be hungry.

Gary Herbert's is not free range, fair chase by any manner of means. He does provide a first rate professional experience if you want to shoot huge farm reared stags released into a high fence area to be shot, and his tahr hunting is all what we call heli-hunting or helicopter assisted. They fly up into the mountains and drop you and the guide on a ridge top, then use the helicopter to herd the tahr to you. NZ hunters abhor this method, and it would never be allowed anywhere in the USA!
If you really want to hunt real wild stags and tahr the Kiwi way, I suggest you contact Gerald and Sue Telford at flyfishhunt.co.nz.
Gerald is a real good bugger and can provide a real hunt for genuine wild animals in wilderness surroundings.

I haven't heard of Sunspot Safaris, which would worry me somewhat! They may be ok, but sounds like a gamble!
