How is the 300 Win Mag for hunting elk?

I am either going to buy a Remington or Savage with a 26" tube, and install a muzzlebreak, good trigger, and bed it. I also handload.

What distance is it safe to shoot an elk at with this gun, and what bullet weights usually shoot good and work good on elk?

The 300WM is my choice for a LR rig. I shoot 208gr Amax's and have plenty of accuracy and energy out to 1000 yards. For long range the 300WM does best with heavy bullets.

I harvested an elk last year at 931 yards with 190gr Berger VLD (only because I ran out of 210s and couldn't find any 215s at the time).

As noted in #2, there are plenty of loads and elk threads about the .300 Win Mag.

A 300 Win is plenty at 500 yards, as are most decent sized calibers. If you load it right, you should be able to reach out to 1,000 yards or so on elk with the 300 win.

If 500 yards is all you're shooting, get a heavy barreled .308 Win. Save some money on reloading supplies, brass, and even factory ammo (if you don't reload), not to mention incredible barrel life.

If you use high BC bullets in heavy for caliber offerings you only real limit is your ability to put it in the vitals at a given distance.

There's nothing in N. American the 300wm isn't capable of taking with one shot if the shot is put in the right place at 1000-1,200yds.

The Win Mag wil work just fine. The safe distance to harvest animals will be dictated by your ability to consistently place your projectile into the intended vital zone of your quarry. For some that distance is 400yds, for others it may be +1000. Usually, the shooter is the handicap, not the rifle.

The 300 WinMag will easy go 500 yards. The limit will be you. Out of the box either rifle will deliver at 500 yards. Now to start an argument:

IMHO the Savage is more likely to be very accurate out of the box and the trigger is pretty good. The Savage's lock time is very fast and that helps. The Savage suffers from a standard length box magazine. It feeds strait and true but you cannot go longer than about 3.400" COAL.

The Remington needs a trigger for sure. The accuracy is good for 500 yards but not likely as good as the Savage IMEx. The box magazine is magnum length and feeds cartridges as long as 3.500" COAL no problem all day long. This is a big plus. Remingtons are to shooters what the small block Chevy is to hotrodders- you want it we can do it. Aftermarket parts are almost unlimited in scope, you can find anything for the Remmy.

Muzzle brakes on 300 WinMags are for little girls who can't stand the taste of good single malt Scotch. Typical number of shots taken are going to be around 20 at a sitting and you can take that. Hunting is maybe 3 at a whack.

Put some money into the scope and mount. Like $500 for a scope. Len sells the new Nightforce SHV for just under $1k. This is a great choice for what you want and will take you to 1K yards for sure. Sub-standard scopes kill more LR hunting rigs than any other single item except maybe ammo.

More opinions and advice on this subject than you are prepared for. Hope you can speed read!

I just ordered a 300 winmag savage LRH. A 32X Nightforce will sit on top of it.

I have a 338 Lapaua FCP, but it is way to heavy for a hunting rifle. I considered a 338 LRH, but I hate the big magazine sticking out while trying to carry. Plus the 300 is .75 lb lighter then the 338.

Now I need to consider some 180-230 bullets...any suggestions?

I think the LRH will do you very well. If you intend to go long, I wouldn't worry too much about any 180gr bullet (with exception of the 180 CEBs). I'd recommend the 208 A-Max, 210 Booger, 215 Booger, 225 Hornady & 230 Booger.

I would like to run some numbers to compare it to my Lapua.
