338 Lapua 250 vs 300 in 1x9 twist Savage?

I just got a 338 lapua in the savage 110ba and need help on reloading. Whats a good accurate bullet for this gun...it has a 1x9 twist i think. I see alot of people shoot the 300's instead of the 250. why is that....i was hoping the 250 will work since it would be flatter shooting, and slightly less kick. Please give any recommendations on bullets and powder...thanks

The 250 grain bullets are my choice because at the distance the Lapua is capable of the 250
grain will have flatter trajectory and just as much energy because of velocity.

If I were going to shoot 300 grain bullets I would opt for a larger case (338/378, 338 Excalibur
ETC. to get the velocity at or above 3000 ft/sec.

Any good 250 grain bullet will give you every thing you want. I use the 250 grain Accubond
because of its performance at POI. Sometimes depending on the game and distance I use
the 225 Accubond and It is amazing.

My 338s are all 1 in 10 twist so you should do fine with the 1 in 9.

good friend here is loading for the Savage. He found with the 1 in 9 that the 300's did much better. His groups were tighter by far. His thoughts were that the 9 twist was almost to fast for the 250's.

Not saying he is right or wrong on that thought, but all his testing he did, the 300's shined over the 250's.

i have the 110Ba in 338LM....

my load is:
300g SMK
Lapua brass
88.5g H1000
fed 215M primers
3.75 over all length

just fits the magazine and shoots 0.5-0.6 MOA out to 1000 yards

my rifle to 70-80 rounds to settle but i now have 150 rounds through it and it just keeps getting better and better.

here are the two proven loads for my BA110
both shoot sub moa (probably around 1/2 moa and better if i am on my game)

225gr nosler accubond
neck sized lapua brass
CCI LR magnum primers
87.0gr IMR 7828ssc
OAL 3.670"
2900fps muzzle and stays supersonic till about 1300 yards depending on atmospherics

300gr SMK
89.2gr Retumbo
cci lr magnum primer
lapua neck sized brass
OAL 3.714"
2780 fps muzzle and stays supersonic till about 1900 yards

haven't been doing too much with 250grainers (have only shot over a chrono with hornady factory loads)
the 300's have been shooting well and the 225gr accubonds were one of the fist loads i made for it and they have been shooting so good i haven't felt the need to waste powder on load developement for the 250's at this point .....

on a side note from what i have found regarding the 1 in 9 twist rate... i have heard people say "the 1-9 is too fast for the 250's and lighter etc.... " but my 225gr load seems to shoot great, seemingly in contradiction to the "too fast" claim

as for the 250's being flatter shooting....
according to my ballistic program the trajectory to 1000 is a wash when shooting 250's at 2920fps and 300's at 2780fps,
the 250's are 5.8MOA for 10mph wind @1000 vrs 5.4MOA for the 300's,again a wash
the 250"s have 1718 ftlbs @ 1000 vrs 2078 ftlbs for the 300's
250's go transsonic around 1700 vrs around 1900 for the 300's....
so i would say try both and pick the most accurate one because unless you are pushing it out further than a mile you wont be disapointed by either...

I have to agree with J E custom that the 250's will probably give you everything you want... the 300's might just give you a bit more ...

as for the recoil the brake on the 110BA makes my 300grain loads kick like my 308....

I had a savage, long range hunter my load was H-1000 95.5 grains 250 grain accubond 215 match. Seating depth was 3.655 oal. Which was .045 off the lands of my rifle. One thing to watch is my rifle seemed to have a tight chamber and reached pressure earlier than most rifles. I recommend shooting a ladder test to start. On the plus side it reached high velocities with lower powder charges.This load produced .4 moa for me. @ 2980.

Using Sierra Game King 250g with H1000 at 95g loads getting 3 shot cloverleafs of less than 2mm between shots. Understand that every rifle is different and you need to work on a load "IT" likes
Sierra Match 300g with 89.9 Retumbo is outstanding in my savage at 1200+yds

I just picked up a Savage Magnum 112 single shot. Shot from 88-92.5 gr of H-1000 under the 300SMK.
I would run 250s out of the Lapua if I didn't have 4k 300gr SMKs. Less recoil, and close on ballistics. There are tons of loads out there for the 250s, I would concentrate on H1000 as its a hair faster than Retumbo and Retumbo is better for 300s. H1000 should be CLOSE to ideal for the 250. Start at book minimum and go up. With a Savage your headspace will determine how much powder to a large extent so don't be surprised if you can run over most or under most loads.

Im shooting the 250 Berger Elite out of 110BA Stealth with 90.0 grains of Retumbo. Nosler Brass getting .200 groups at 200 yards. Ive worked up to this load and foundd it very stable high range load at 2850. Ive got a box of 300's to im getting ready to develop. OTM's love this load. I find the over sabalization not a issue.

I have the 110BA stealth In 338. The chambers are super tight but ive found that it is great for the reloader as my case grows .003 i bump it .001 im in my 16th reload with Nosler Brass? Yes, Nosler. Im not liading hot however and am Using Hornady Dies to FL resize. I anneal after every Firing.

RCSB Competition seating die (love the window for placing bullet!)
CCI 250 primers
3.8330 COL
Cases trimmed to 2.714 (2nd and 3rd round)

Results - 7 inch spread @1485 yards (my consistent target range)

Here's my question:
I have a box of 300 Bergers OTM's and would like to stay with Retumbo. I'm guessing 89.1 to 89.5 would be ideal. Can anyone confirm their loads for the Berger's?. I've seen those numbers for the 300 Sierra SMK's. Thanks.
