My sister is ordering a 26 Nosler; she's convinced it has the best ballistics out of any rifle, and the numbers actually show this, it's built by Fierce Firearms, it costs around $2200 and looks pretty swell. It shoots flat out to 400 or so yards I guess:rolleyes: anyone have one who can tell me about it in case I should warn her? She's gonna buy it around Friday gun)

I don't think there are too many, other than gun writers, who have much experience with the 26 Nosler. I read a couple of articles. Guns and Ammo and Shooting Times. As gun writers do, they seem to love new stuff and the 26 Nosler is no exception. They did some load testing and had a few 1 shot kills. From their data I figure you could crank a 140 grain pill up to 3,500 fps or so with RL-33 and that would make it the king of the 6.5mm hill by a good margin That also would equal the standard muzzle energy from a 7mm RUM which would be pretty impressive if in fact it could be done. On the down side, 26 Nosler brass costs $2.64 per case (Midway USA) and this chambering is expected to be seriously hard on the barrel. Nevertheless, I've got one in the works. I'm waiting on the reamer but should have it put together and out to the range within a couple of months - in plenty of time to get it tuned for hunting season.

Barrel life is most likely going to suck more than a hoover... They claim flat to 400 yards, then there is NO way its gonna get even close to 1000 rounds. Heck a 7RUM might get 600-800 rounds of accurate barrel life, and they don't shoot anywhere near that flat. This is purely speculation, as I don't own one. But just making an obsevation.

I don't have one so I can't speak for it's performance but I know that there is "NO" cartridge that will shoot flat. All bullets start dropping as soon as they leave the barrel so there is no such thing as a 400
yard bullet that has no drop.

There are plenty of cartridges that will shoot flatter at 400 yards, so we need to keep everything in perspective.

I had a 7mm STW that would propel a 140 grain bullet to over 3700 ft/sec accurately and 3800
before the accuracy fell off.

Also I have gotten the 223 WSM to over 4500 ft/sec with a 40 grain bullet as another example
but It still has some drop at 400 yards.

Weatherby did some testing for the military using a 378 Weatherby case necked down to .224 and achieved over 5700 ft/sec but oddly enough it did not shoot flat at 400 yards, and where is it now?

The 260 is the New "Designer" cartridge and it will get lots of press and hopefully it will survive
with time and may end up to be a great cartridge. Who knows.

With high velocity, barrel life and twist rates will be the main issues.

Sorry for the rant, I just wan't to warn about claims of the best ever, Flattest, most powerful,
best all around, all the words that sales like to use but can never prove.

flat is used loosely in the shooting world everything has a arching trajectory we just use the term flat shooting when comparing and cosidering cartridges heck I think even lasers have a very slight arc in trajectory

Barrel life is relative and may not be important to the market Nosler seeks.

These are intended to be hunting rifles with a 5" or so vertical from 0 to 400 yards. That seems to be achieved. Others have achieved it before. I'm sure I can exceed it with a 270 Weatherby and copper bullets or come up with some wildcat that can. Barrel life will suffer with that parameter.

Nosler is marketing it as 'flat', that and the case length is what is new. The rest of the dimensions and angles are not new.

I really like the case size. As I've said before, more than a WSM less then a RUM. Sure, so are Dakota, Ruger and others that set out to match the belted performance with no belt but... they fiddled with the dimensions from the 404/RUM/WSM model.

It's all personal preference. I prefer no belt. That said my new Hall Action+Krieger 4L barrel in 300 Weatherby is just rocking cool accurate. The Weatherby Fibermark is less accurate, a fine hunting rifle, light weight and on the bench, kicks my butt when I shoot it for load development. I'd still carry it.

I think that is the name some gave it, Not Sure Though.

I posted just to let the poster know that the claims of "Best Ballistics" and best cartridge are subjective and over stated because there are "Flatter shooting" cartridges with better ballistics available.

I would never try to talk anyone out of buying what they want, Just stating that you shouldn't believe everything you read or hear.

I agree completely.

Ditto. Very well said and my thoughts exactly.
