Muzzle breaks / are all equal

I'm thinking of putting a muzzle brake on my 7mm Rem Mag. (I'm 66 and getting older GRR)

Is a muzzle brake a muzzle break? Are all created equal?

I would have to say no, they are not created equal. Some will reduce recoil more than others, some will kick up more debris from muzzle blast than others, etc..
Now, the question would be, how do you select the proper muzzle break?
I don't know. There are countless formulae to calculate the efficiency of a muzzle break (the military has several manuals on the subject - but they're for very big guns) and I'm not smart enough to use any of them.
One aspect of making your selection that I can speak to is the placement of ports.
Ports placed evenly around the barrel divide the gases essentially evenly, but that means they affect the shooters on both sides of you equally and kick up debris. Ports placed only on the sides and top of the barrel's muzzle will eliminate or at least dramatically reduce the creation of a dust/gravel storm when the rifle is fired.
The claims that uneven muzzle break ports will affect accuracy are a myth. The bullet is long gone by the time gases find their way through the ports.

Are all created equal? No! Do a custom search on the top right corner and you'll get plenty of results. JE Custom did a pretty extensive comparison and it's worth your time to explore.

I think if you do a couple of searches you might find an old read on muzzle brakes, but no; muzzle brakes are not equal. The side port brakes seem to offer a better advantage over the radial brakes. In a nut shell its about surface area and expelling gasses. I use a side port on a 300 ultra mag and now it kicks like a 270 win. I shoot 210grn bergers with no problem. There are some good makes of side ported muzzle brakes by smiths on this site.... here are a few that come to mind.

The slab brakes may not be by some peoples view as being pretty or sleek looking on a gun but for preformace they seem to work the best hands down in my opnion. I'm extremely happy with mine and if I get another sholder pounder it getting another slab style brake. Hope this helps.gun)

Are you hunting or target shooting with the rifle? If you are hunting there are brakes that aren't as loud as others. I have one braked rifle and I purchased it that way. It was so loud that I couldn't hunt with it with out hearing protection. I replaced the original brake with a Vias brake and it is loud but substantially less that the other. Just a thought.

i would NOT ever use a VIAS type, unless you like you and your gun covered in dirt...

You said you had a muzzle brake that was so loud you couldn't hunt with the rifle. You switched to a VAIS brake. The way you worded your comment it comes across that a VAIS brake was quiet enough to shoot without hearing protection! I don't know of ANY muzzle brake that would allow you to shoot without hearing protection without causing hearing damage!
