Vortex vs. Leupold for long range shooting, need advice

My name is Jon Parbst and I am a new member to this sight but have been reading informational posts on the site for a couple months. To say I am humbled by your knowledge and my lack of it would be an understatement! I appreciate any advice given.
I have a .30-378 Weatherby Mag. in a Weatherby Accumark Rifle and I want to extend my effective range for hunting. I would love to have a scope that i could practice with to 1000 yards, which would make the 500 - 700 yard shots on a game animal much more doable. Currently I have a Leupold LPS 3.5-14 on it and have been told by the leupold custom shop that they do not do work on these for long range shooting. I have been looking at Vortex pst and hst scopes and have heard both good and bad on them. I am trying to spend $1000 or less and am looking to choose between either leupold or vortex. I would appreciate any input on this decision.

I have a vortex pst 4-16x50 on my savage long range hunter in 6.5x284 it does the job great for me because I have areas where I need that 4 power and 16 has enough to reach out there for me. My buddy has the 6-24 pst and loves it. for the money they are hard to beat

i used to be a die hard Leupold guy, and now I switched to Vortex I could not be happier, 4-16x44 HS BDC you can dial if you need ,or you can use the BDC reticle bet of both worlds.IMO

i have the 4-16x50 HS BDC on my tikka t3 in 308 that scope is perfect for that gun.

Do some more reading on the vortex ,people are pretty fed up with them needing the warranty way too often . I have owned plenty of them both but prefer leupold in the end.

I have a Vortex 4-16 HS with the bdc reticle. I love it. I like the 2 minute horizontal hash marks for windage. You can use the verticle marks for elevation but I dial mine in. Only drawback for some is the elevation clicks are in 1/2 moa and the windage are in 1/4. For precise target shooting this can be a disadvantage, but for hunting I feel it is not a problem.

Shot to 1200 yards last week with my buddy who is a die hard leupold fan. He liked my scope also (although he didn't jump up and down saying he was going to switch). My current build is going to have the same scope in a 6-24. Hard to beat for the price

Welcome to LRH and enjoy!

Unless you need better magnification, your current scope should have plenty of elevation adjustment but best with 20 MOA rail for the 1K yard challenges. There are guys here that effective shoots beyond the 1K yard with the same magnification.

I was blessed with bull elk harvest at 931 yards last year with a .300 Win Mag topped with 4.5-14 Leupold B&C.

Mabye 2 threads?? I dont see that as people being fed up with them. There are a lot more threads about Leupold being over priced, or out dated than people fed up with Vortex.

I am pretty fed up with vortex to be honest the fact that they take the time to listen to the customers and shooters and then somehow manage to deliver optics they really want is pretty hard to swallow

We run about every viper scope they have from hst-pst-hs- xlr and the razor lineup and honestly couldn't be happier. In fact I run a 4-16 hs xlr ffp on my hunting rig 338 lapua and couldn't be happier. The scope just fits the rifle really well and has taken any beating I dished out to it.

I think you would really be happy with that scope for what you plan on doing with it.

I ran mine out to a mile the other day and couldn't be happier with the performance.

I shoot 1,000 yds. with (6mm Norma BR.) my Vortex 6-24x50mm PST FFP MOA scope with a Vortex Custom Turret. The turret is dead nuts accurate.

I grew up using a 2 to 7 power Redfield. It worked great. You could shoot stuff running or standing, near or far (far being 200 yards). That was before "long range" hunting was invented. Once I decided to get modern and acquired a 338 RUM I had to do some thinking about what scope to put on it. I didn't want to give up jump shooting deer but I also wanted to aim small to hit small at long range. That meant I needed a BIG zoom range in my scope. I ended up with a 4.5X to 30X Bushnell 6500 Elite. I love it and have since bought a second for the 300 RUM. I paid around $800. I hear Vortex makes a good scope but they don't go to 30X so that decided it for me.

It's all about wallet size. Big wallet, Leupold. Smaller wallet, cheaper scope. I have 'em both and like both.
