For anyone in the Hailey, Idaho area who wants to hunt wolves.........

This was put out today by Idaho Game Department and I knew about this incident over the weekend as the one involved had told my girlfriend about it. They were running hounds lion hunting and had lost track of several dogs. Eventually one came back injured and they found the other one using GPS. Upon approaching the area, the came across 4 wolves who were in the process of eating it. "And they only kill the weak and the old....." Whatever.

Hi,

I am sending this brief email to about 30 northern Magic Valley Region sportsmen and women who have purchased wolf tags for the current wolf season. We have had a recent incident where a domestic dog in the vicinity of Kelly Mountain/Red Elephant Mine was injured by what is believed to be 4 wolves. Kelly Mountain/Red Elephant Mine is located just north of Croy Creek, west of Hailey and Bellevue, in IDFG Game Management Unit 48.

Hunting is a primary management tool that we have in Idaho to manage wolves. That is why I'm contacting you. If you are interested in going wolf hunting, this might be one area to try, although as you know, wolves can move long distances in very little time. If you do go, I would be interested in hearing how things went or if you were successful. You can also give me a call at 208-324-4359 if you have questions or other thoughts.

Also, please note that our big game public meeting will be in Hailey on Monday night, February 24. Meeting will be from 5:30 to 7:30 at the Hailey Community Campus, Rooms 301 & 302, 1050 Fox Acres Rd., Hailey.

Sincerely,

Jerome Hansen

Think I'll be making preps to head that way next week.

What is recommended for on road travel, pickup, tav/utv, tracks.

If hounds were being used does this mean a fella could trudge around the area.

I'd figure on staying in the hills a couple of days. Would have to go slow as the pack goats have had a lazy winter. And . . . I'm old:D

Hi,

This is a follow-up to last week's email asking for your help in harvesting wolves in the vicinity of Red Elephant Mine. I wanted to let you know that we have had a confirmed wolf attack on a horse at the lower end of Red Elephant Gulch near Croy Creek. Wildlife Services will be conducting a wolf control action in conjunction with this attack. This is not to say stop hunting, just an fyi in case you were going to be hunting in the area. As before, if you have questions, I can be reached at 208-324-4359. And thanks!!

Good deal.

I've learned there are some howling north of Caribou mtn in unit 66. North of the Henry cut off.

Also, a local says there are several hundred elk in the unit that haven't made the migration. What's with that?

That's closer than Hailey, for me.

As soon as "this spring" is through I'm headed that way.

Thers alot goin on in that caribou, dan creek, country if ya can get up there.....aka snowmobile or your tracked delio..........

Its to my understanding, when the people came upon the wolves eating their dog. They have the right to start sending lead. If it was my expensive hunting dog, It would sound like WW2 out there.
