416 Rigby Guys

I finally found my rifle. A nicely figured Ruger #1 in 416 Rigby. I want to shoot 400gr TSX. just wondering if there are any attributes about the 416 someone wants to share. Anything really. I dont know anyone that has one so it is all new to me.

With a new interest in hunting grounds that have game, I have started to look at a trip to Africa. I believe it is the same guy, Bruce from your area and he is contributing to a African hunting forum and talks about this forum "longrangehunting". It sounds like he may have some, (on the ground experience) with these big ol' cannons.
What made you decide on the 416 Rigby? I have been debating a 375 H&H for its history or a 416 Rigby, for their mild yet big bore capabilities.
I have zero experience with big guns, and HATE recoil! But who can go to Africa without a thumper!

I picked the 416 rigby because its what I found. I wanted another big bore. Was actually looking for a 45-70 then changed to a 458 Lott .. The Lott was hard to find in a #1 then I got the opportunity at a 416 rigby with a pretty stock so I bought it.

Well unsure as to what you want to know, but I have owned a few over the years, from a Brno (CZ) 602 to a couple of 550's and I am rebarreling another 550 to 416 Rigby at the moment.
All have been very good shooters and the 400/410gr pills work very very well, in fact, I also have a 458Lott, and the Rigby out penetrates it by a good deal in my bullet boxes.
It absolutely rocks the Water buff we have here in Down Under, most high shoulder shots have them nose down instantly and rarely do they get back on their feet, it will also go from stem to stern from all angles with Woodleigh 410gr RN's. Follow up shots are only needed when the first shot is fluffed slightly and I have never had to put more than 3 shots into a buff with the 416, but I have with the 458Lott, which surprised me as the placement was good on all shots, anyway, you won't go wrong with a 416 Rigby.

thanks for the info.. I wasnt really sure what I was asking for mostly just experience with the cartridge. and yes I assure you Korhill I will use it for a couple of rabbits...answer your text message!

I met a guy at the range who was checking the zero of his Rigby for his upcoming squirrel hunt! This guy had quite a few big bore rifles and he said he loves to practice with them on ground squirrels. He said once you've shot small game with anything over a 375 it's just hard to go back

Be ready for your head to pop up like a Rock'em Sock'em robot! I briefly had a T/C encore barrel in 416 Rigby with open sights. That thing they say about the big bores being more of a push on recoil doesn't apply to light rifles. The recoil was hard and fast. Didn't injure me but sure did hurt my trigger finger with the trigger guard. Having said that I have a Rem 700 in 416 Rem Mag that weighs about 10 lbs and it isn't bad at all with 400 gr bullets at 2400 fps. That is what the Rigby is loaded to although the Rigby can be loaded a couple hundred fps faster.

Best advice is to get a good tight grip with both hands, it helps to let your whole body roll with the recoil. A nice heavy scope to add some weight wouldn't hurt either.

Roll....that's what his body does best.

I think he will be fine with the recoil.

Eye relief is your friend. Someplace along the way Mike we talked about a 1.5-5x Leupold. If you can find one the 30mm 1-4x Leupold Euoropean is a much better scope in my opinion. I've got both, and had several of the 1.5-5's.
