I am debating on making a short barrel 300 win mag. I have one in a 26 inch tube already. I was thinking of something 20" or under. I know I am kinda crazy but that is why I posted it in the specialty pistol section. Not that your crazy but you probably like to fiddle with things that your not really supposed to do like i do.I was wondering with the guys who shoot specialty pistol what type of powders you are using? Do any of you use a 300 win mag or some thing similar?I want to load 200-230 grain bullets. The thing I want to minimize is muzzle flash and blast if possible. I have had pretty good luck with the Retumbo, H1000, 4831sc. The normal stuff in a longer barrel. I was wondering would a faster burn rate work better in the short barrel? Also how do the shorter barrels like the heavy bullets? Or do you pretty much use the same loads for the short barrels as the long ones. I have found some articles on cutting the 308 barrels way down he used IMR4895 and a 165gr -170gr bullet and had pretty good success here is the article if your interested Short-Barreled Precision Rifle Performance Demystified...Again | The Truth About Guns

Bottom line, who am I to call you crazy?
There's a fair number of SP shooters that are using 7mm WSM's, 7mm Dakota's, 7 LRM's and many of the large .30-.338 cal. chamberings in their pistols. Most are using the slower powders that perform best in the rifle length barrels. And yes, the long high BC bullets like the shorter barrels. I believe the short stiff barrels have less harmonic issues.
One of the inevitable bi-products of these combinations is muzzle blast and muzzle flash.-Unless you have a can on the gun, it's just the way it is.:D My largest SP is a 6.5 X.284 with a side discharge brake, and it a bit obnoxious to anybody that is shooting or spotting beside you. The faster burning powders offer poor load density in the large case, and accuracy will typically suffer. Hope this was a little bit of help to you in making your decision...

I've shot quite a few supposedly rifle cartridges in handgun length barrels from 13 to 15 inches. These have included 223 Remington, 223 Remington AI, 7mm/08 Remington, 308 Winchester, 30/06 Springfield, 375 H&H Magnum, 444 Marlin and 45-70 Government and have loaded for all except one of them (the 45-70). Conclusions:

1. You will not be able to decrease muzzle blast/flash significantly by powder selection.

2. Use the same powder you would use in rifle length barrels.

I shoot a 30-338WM from a. 16.5" bbl T/C Encore handgun.

I use IMR4350 and H4831sc primarily with 165, 175 & 180 gr bullets.

Only time I notice muzzle flash is right at dusk.

In all my short bbl guns, I've had good results using same powders I would in a longer rifle bbl.

I use what the rifle length guys use, but may lean to the powder that is the next fastest.
In my 7 SAUM (162 A-Max) H-1000, 7WSM (180 grain JLK) H-1000, 7 Dakota with 200 grain wildcats and 180 Berger's (Retumbo & H-1000), 7mm LRM 180 grain Hybrid - H-1000.
These are examples.
