I bought a 6.5 Remington mag it came with dies and some brass but not enough. I have read enough to just confuse myselfe. I heard you can use 7mm mag and 338 mag brass. can some one explain to me the process and what I will need to purchase. Or are there any short cuts. Thanks in advance, Keith

Look at case forming dies my friend. You will need to move the shoulder back and neck it down.

keep pitching questions as some of us do reform brass. I've never shortened any, but done plenty of necking and blowing out. You may need to ream your necks after shortening as the brass is thicker as you go down the case.

I would look for the 6.5 RM brass first. Then I would look for 350 Remington magnum brass.
(It is the same case with just a larger neck).
Sizing it down is easy if you set the dies to the 6.5 overall length, and then fire form it in your chamber. (the neck is shorter due to the smaller neck) Body length and case length is the same
for both cases.
You should be able to find some 350 brass ,Cheep.

That's It. You may want to anneal It if it has been fired but it should size easy with good
sizing lube.
You can look both cartridges up on SAMME and it will confirm If you want to.

Correct me if I'm wrong but downsizing necks normally has to be done in steps. For instance for sizing 375 Roger brass down to 30/375 Ruger I have to downsize to 338 with a 338 CM FL die and then to 30 caliber
Going from a 350 rem mag neck to a 6.5 rem mag neck in one pass might be a problem

Thanks ! You are probably right about taking it down in 2 steps. I always try it and If I have a problem then I change my procedure. I have done 375 H&H down to 7mm and had no problems
with sizing them in one try but it may have been the shoulder taper on the 375 (15o) that helped.
I have not had a problem with new cases but fired cases will need to be annealed unless you do a two step sizing. One of the reasons I like the bushing dies is that I can use different bushings to do this without two sets of dies.

I've formed cases from 7mm rem mag and sized down 350 rem mag necks. Neck sizing is far easier. I started with a 350 neck die, then to a hornady generic die I had drilled out to .343 then full length sized in a 6.5 rem mag die I had reamed to .301". My intention was to make a 277-350 Remington Magnum but the project never got past the case forming stage and I traded everything off. Forming from 7 mag brass involved using a 350 mag trim die then following the other steps. I lost a LOT of cases in the 7 mag forming process which is why I'm saying to start with 350 mag brass. I may eventually do a 7mm Harvey (7mm-350 rem mag) and I'll do it pretty much the same way as before besides maybe adding one more die between the .343 and the .301 just so I don't have to be so deliberate with the process. If you have a turret press you can knock things out pretty fast. I only have a single stage so it slowed me down a little. Oh, one thing I will caution you on. If you use a gener
ic neck die like the hornady be careful and not push the shoulder back to far. I did that once and it looked pretty funny. I'm sure it would fire form ok but I didn't like it and it only happened once.

So you sized a 350 rem mag case in the following steps
350 rem mag neck die
Neck die drilled out to .342
Neck die drilled out to .301
270 neck die?
BTW aren't 350 rem mag cases as hard to come by as 6.5 rem mag cases?
I did find some 350 mag brass today I havent bought it yet. Im still scratching my head a bit on this project. I see rcbs has a set on midway 168 bucks to much for my budget. I do want to do it right but there must be a cheaper way. any help is appreciated. I love the round realy fun to shoot not much recoil and the factory loads seem to be pretty accurate so whatever it takes Im determined to do this project. Thanks

There is a semi local gun shop that has some 350 mag brass. I think midway has it in stock from time to time unlike the 6.5 mag brass. Gunbroker has 350 brass pretty regularly as well.
Only thing I would do different is add another step about .320". A 7mm wsm or saum die would probably work just fine for the additional step.
