Can you load 180 grain Berger VLDs fora Remington 700 and have them fit on the factory magazine?I think thThornton has to be no more than 3.60".

you don't really want to be on the lands with this cal... There's freebore on this one for a reason.. I just picked up a lh 7rum lss a few weeks ago.. working with 171 barnes and retumbo at 3.650"
I had a 7rum a few years back and she liked either the 175 hornady with I 5010 or 140 sierra with rl25... both at 3.650" I made some of my longest shots with the 140 and rl25; that rifle would cloverleaf with that combo

there's always a bit of trouble if you pop something at point blank with a cal. like this- use either heavy for cal. or controlled expansion to lessen the problem, but I never shot anything with my last one at under 200 yards. every pill passed through.

Are you setting your sizing die to compensate for the shoulder position if your chamber is a few thou. long?? I had to turn my sizing die out a bit as my stw's chamber was cut with a nearly new reamer. If I don't set my die to the shoulder location I'll have the same issues you do Bob- .015" stretch per firing and two firings to the bright line just above the belt; as I'm loading now, .003" stretch per shot after the first firing and the 400+ casings I have will outlast two barrels. Set your sizing die to bump the shoulder two to three thou. and you'll get better than five firings per case.
If you don't have tools to measure simply turn your die out a full turn and run a lubed case ( 1x fired) in that you have used a candle or match to smoke the shoulder on. Then proceed to turn the die down 1/16 turn at a time until the die is just kissing the brass shoulder. Try it in your rifle, and adjust just a bit further down if chambering is tough.

Something else is wonky then my friend. I've never seen a properly sized 7stw casing go less than 5 firings and we've had four of them between my pops and I. We both fl resize with redding fl dies (I've got a set for my press; he's got one for his) and use standard seaters. I don't doubt you that you are having issues with brass life; sorting them out can be like pulling teeth sometimes. I lost some of my win brass with my current stw before I figured the die out.. Perturbed to say the least considering win 7stw brass isn't made anymore.
You will get slightly better brass life from the 7rum (I have one of those again too) but you will tire your bore faster and you don't get more than 100 fps or so more speed. On the bright side with the 7rum, even if it dies out 300 rum brass sizes to 7rum in one die pass. The 300rum isn't going anywhere.
What's your load again?? I saw some of your pics earlier this year and it seemed a rather normal setup and load but I forget specifics... You have a re-barreled sps in 7stw correct??
