Cold Bore

I have one rifle that shoots 3/4 to 1 minute high on a cold bore shot. After one shot it settles down to it's zero. This is OK for targets but would be useless for hunting.

Any Ideas?

best thing to do would be to try to give it to somebody who would give it a good home. guess who comes to mind? lol
you could also try convincing yourself it is your second shot and act surprised that
you missed. again.
also try holding lower on the first shot.
maybe waste one on a rock but then you would have to lie about first round hit?
or you could learn to shoot fast and hope the second one gets there first.
the latter is my personal favorite and the one that ive been using for years.
i doubt id be comfortable using it with somebody shooting back at me however.

Is this cold bore issue consistent? Meaning every time you shoot it cold the round hits high. Also, is it just cold bore or is clean bore as well? I am not sure this makes the rifle useless for hunting. For example you could zero for cold bore and if a 2nd or 3rd shot for follow up is needed you pull 1 MOA out and send it. It is certainly is not ideal but if it is consistent it could be used.

Yours is not the only rifle that does that. I have several, and I deal with it by firing a fouling shot through it and dry patching before I go hunting. It will eliminate this problem and be dead on for the first cold bore shot on game.

The change it caused by oil or solvent left in the bore and only firing can remove all of it and in some cases seasoning the barrel with a little copper fouling will make the difference.

I have a 7/08 that does the same thing but after the fouling shot it will consistently group 5
shots under 1/10th MOA.

In other words, there is nothing wrong with it. It is just an individual and likes what it likes.

10-4. This is quite common. I wish it wasn't. But it is what it is.

If it's a fouled barrel cold bore problem, and all the more obvious fastener-type (screw torque) issues were properly tended to, I would think about re-bedding the barreled action in the stock. I suppose there could be a number of sources, but if it shoots after the first shot, it may be a bedding problem. Will be interesting to hear from others.

It's in one of John Whidden's stocks, it's a v-block bedding system. All bolts are torqued to spec but it isn't bedded ( don't have to bed with the v-block ).

That's the way it's supposed to work but I would still bed the lug area and make sure the bolts are torqued evenly.

Broz has a good point.

"I" consider a cold bore shot the first shot in a cold clean barrel. If a barrel shoots best after 1 fouling shot and it is not followed immediately by a second shot the second shot after cleaning is a cold bore shot. (Hence the name Cold bore). On the rifle that requires a single fouling shot It
may be weeks before it is used for hunting and I consider the first shot is a cold bore shot because
I am depending on the rifle to dead on for the first shot when barrel, receiver, stock and everything else is at ambient temp.

Clean can be the first shot after cleaning and a cold bore shot to, It just depends on your conditioning of the barrel before making that all important first shot.

As to the issue of V Blocks not needing bedding, one way to find out is to bed it.
