Outstanding. If we can ever find a way to do it on a budget I'm going to kidnap my brother and take him up there to hunt a big bear.

What we'd really like to do is make it a two week fall trip during the latter part of the salmon run so we can possibly work in Moose and Caribou and some fishing as well.

I've hunted some really big, nasty, dangerous boars (hogs) but that's the extent of the dangerous game in the southern US other than black bears.

Hopefully I will be registered in the next year or so and I can sneak you up here with your brother to have fun. Our silver run coincides with brown bear in unit 17b along with moose season also. Safe shooting WildRose.

You do that and I'll make you famous. No BS.

I have a lot of clients who have or will make trips to AK at some point in the future and I'll send them your way. Anyone who treats me right always gets much more in return.

Deal. I'll show you how we natives do it and with food to boot. Standing on a chair watching dad use his classically trained techniques paid off. Hopefully in a year or two I will say bring your gear I'll supply the fun. Cheers

Just say when. After your first season closes you can come down here and I'll let you take as many white tails as you have tags for. We can probably throw in some bird hunting to boot.

The client used a stainless browning in 375 h and h. For the big coastal bears I would consider this minimum, but with the right bullet and shot placement a 338 win mag does the job as well. Both bears from the coast were taken within forty yards. I just completed my guide rifle which is a Montana 1999 action in .416-.375 RUM. I shoot 400 grain a-frames at 2600 into less than .75 moa.

Nice pictures. Trophy of a lifetime for most people right there. Brown bear are on my bucket list, but it will be a while before it happens.

Thanks for the info, so would something like a Ruger Alaskan in .416 Ruger be about right ?

I am toying with the idea of something like this in 375 vs 416. Obviously the 375 will shoot flatter, but 40 yards - that is actually pretty dang close for comfort.

It was definitely close for comfort, but to judge a bear closer is better especially when half of the critter is hidden in the grass. The 375 with shoot a little flatter but the longest shot I would let anyone take would probably be 200 yards. I would say the average shot is from 75 to 125 yards. If you can't decide on which one I'd flip a coin as both cartridges are great choices for bear, have factory ammo available and have accessible reloading components. A ruger Alaskan would be a handy rifle to have up here. Just make sure it is stainless if you plan on chasing coastal bears. Salt water and salty mud can wreak havoc on gear.
